Melissaschroeder.net » Morning Update
Well, HOLY CRAP. I mean, I knew it was coming, but to see it in action is just amazing. Remember, I have a LINKS page. They are saying we have another wave of heavy snow before this is all done. My area is reporting about 15 inches as of 5:45 this morning. We measured about two hours ago and it was 16 out front, but we think we probably have gotten about 1-2 inches since then. They are predicting about 5-10 more inches before this is done. The shoveled area is already covered again, but at least we got a little bit done.
Here are a few pics from around our house:

Shapeshifter Seductions » Career Opportunities For Shifters
How do you decide what your characters do for a living? In my Jaguar Assassin's series, the jaguar shifter community is kept secret because there's an organization hunting them but they have to interact in normal society.
My assassin's work within the system to eradicate everyone that would harm the shifter community and/or reveal them to their enemies. But not everyone can be an assassin.
The fact that they grow fur and fangs also has to be kept secret. These are two of my determining factors when trying to come up with a career because hey, you can't just hang out in the jungle and hunt these days.
I write paranormals but there's another popular genre, urban fantasy that I find fascinating. Can you imagine a world where you live alongside vamps and weres or witches and warlocks? Would you want a gargoyle for a neighbor? Would there be a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military because let's face it, they could be very useful. The possibilities are endless.
I think, for the most part your shifters job choices are determined by the community/society that you create and the story you want to write. How do you handle it? What are some of the creative career choices you've given your shifters and why?
You know how curious I am;-)

Dana's Magic and Mayhem » Mom Nature, You Can Stop Now
My five year old woke me up before eight in the morning to let me know there was "a LOT of snow on the ground."
Really? Huh.
Then I compared last night's snow picture to today's snow picture. Both are done from my front door.
See the perfectly visible bush? Now check this out:
Do you see the bush? Because I don't. And the damn thing comes up to my hip. (Have I mentioned I'm five foot nothing?) And it's still snowing!
The Weather Channel's little desktop toolbar is still telling me we're expecting as much as twenty-four inches of snow before it stops. Well, I hate to say it but I think we surpassed that mark around three a.m.
Snopocalypse indeed. I think I should be building a giant snowmobile and loading things onto it two by two. [Link]
Samhain Weblog » The Masochistic Heroine
I started thinking about masochist heroines not because of any fiction I’d read recently but because of some nonfiction—a book by a woman who’d been one of the multiple wives of a Mormon fundamentalist. She’d spent most of her life in grinding poverty bearing thirteen children and dodging her husband’s murderous relatives. I’m afraid my first reaction to the book was “Why on earth didn’t she leave?” Some of the author’s reasons are understandable—she was the descendant of several generations of polygamists, which made her think that kind of life was normal, and she didn’t really have a way to get herself and her children out of the family compound. But some of them are just incomprehensible. Namely, she swears she loved him.
Now, I write romances—love is my stock in trade. But I have a hard time understanding how you can love a man who marries six other women, is seldom around (because he’s off earning money to support these women and his thirty-plus children), and has little time for affection when he is. Unless, of course, you’re a masochist.
Masochist heroines were a lot more popular in the eighties than they are now (and I should say at this point that I’m not talking about heroines in BDSM—I’m talking psychological masochism here). For example, take Linda Howard’s Sarah’s Child. This is a lot of people’s favorite book, but it’s always struck me as faintly creepy. The heroine, one of those ubiquitous eighties executive assistants, marries her tycoon boss …

A Brief Moment of Pleasure
Fran Lee
Resplendence Publishing 2010
Lisa Hampton is serious about her martial arts career…but a woman in the traditional Japanese martial arts is seldom taken seriously. At least, not until one hunky and hot man takes her…very seriously.
James Rhee runs his own brand of martial arts studio…teaching advanced moves and technique to movie stars and competitors who want to win. Something Lisa genuinely doesn't want any part of.
Being a serious teacher of serious stuff, she finds it hard to swallow his methods. But she soon finds it's damn hard to refuse the maddening man anything…including her body.

I turned, glancing up at the man standing beside my car, leaning down to speak to me through the open window. I thought that he was Japanese at first, but from the size of him, I decided on second thought that he was more than likely Korean. A closer look at his face as he removed his reflective dark glasses confirmed my second impression. He smiled politely at me as I …

Konigsburg, Texas, Book 3

Taste of Kiwi » Dumped!
The theme for today is dumped. I’ve chosen the opening scene from Lovers at Last. Our heroine goes to her best friend for sympathy after the man she’s been with for some time decides to marry someone else. Justin is very happy with this development because he’s had his eye on Pearl for some time. It’s time to make his move!
Lovers at Last by Shelley Munro
A thump on Justin Collet’s door jerked his attention from the Auckland versus Canterbury rugby match playing on his television. Before he could push to his feet, he heard his front door fly open and hit the stopper. Seconds later it slammed shut. The strident tap-tap of high heels echoed in the hall and Pearl MacInray stomped into his den. Justin took a moment to admire the temper glowing on her face, the flashing pale blue eyes and golden tumble of curls before doing a scan of her curvy body. Immediately he tensed, his cock shooting to partial arousal. Damn, she was one fine woman. Pity they were merely friends. Pearl came to a halt in front of him, magnificent breasts heaving with the force of her ire.
“Andrew Dickins is a bastard,” Pearl spat out, shaking her fist in Justin’s face. Something white and thin flashed past his nose, almost hitting him in the eye.
Justin stood, moving out of range. “Wanna beer?”
“Yeah. Thanks.” Pearl dropped onto his battered leather couch, her miniskirt riding up to display a good portion …

The Rantings & Ravings of Jeanne St. James » Banished Hero by Anita Philmar
Banished Hero
Excerpt:
“Why won’t you eat, Faye Lynn?”
The sound of Havyn’s voice in her head startled her so much she lost her grip and fell forward. She kicked out her wings and glided to the wall between
two abandoned stalls. Her heart pounding, she told herself he couldn’t be anywhere nearby. She must be imagining things.
The other bird might squawk or send her his feelings of unease as a warning, but he couldn’t talk to her in a language she could understand. She glanced around nervously, trying to catch her breath. Havyn wasn’t here. He left her several
hours ago after bringing her home from the market. He probably planned to leave her in the barn for a few days until her father left the area. Then he’d try
to train her to be his pet. She’d gone through the routine before.
“You’re not getting away.” His voice sounded inher head again.
At the same time, the large black falcon swooped down and landed on the wall beside her. The shock of both Havyn’s voice and the bird knocked her off balance. She tumbled onto the hay in one of the stalls. She rolled and tried to right herself, but a large wing covered her chest and held her down.
“Transform Faye Lynn."
His voice, his touch, the familiar scent of him, all hit her senses at once. She stared into his onyx eyes and shifted her shape. Her wings became arms. His beak softened into full lips. Black feathers turned to silky tufts of … [Link]
