Kiss and Tell » New Release and a change to the blog!

Tuesday 2 February 3:49:00 UTC 2010

I have been anxiously refreshing the Phaze website all day for that exciting moment when the book would be live. It's not there yet but any moment I just know it. So I'm going to go ahead and Squeee since this is my only day on the blog this week.

Before I get into the release I'd like to take a moment to announce that…

Trailer Trash Tuesday has left the building!

We’ve decided to change things up here at Kiss and Tell and we've discontinued our Trailer Trash Tuesday. I imagine we'll still see videos crop up here and there since sometimes they are fun to post but starting tomorrow we welcome a new member to the blog.

I am pleased to announce the lovely Noelle is joining us. She is one half of the Chloe Harris writing team whose first Kensington release, Secrets of Sin, debuted last week. You've seen her here a time or two as a guest and now she's come to stay.

Like Lissa, Sam, Mari and myself, Noelle is a Carolina girl as well and we are excited to have her. Has anyone else noticed how many wonderful authors we have here in the Carolinas? I think that's so cool.

So, welcome to the blog Noelle we're glad to have you!

On to the new release or rerelease for the technicaly minded. :)

Fierce Romance » February – The Month of Love

Monday 1 February 23:18:00 UTC 2010

As lovers of romance, we don't need an excuse to celebrate love. But the rest of the world likes to use February, as the month of Valentine's Day, to talk about love and romance. Here at Fierce Romance, we like to talk about those subjects all the time!

Red Sage is kicking off a brand new, up-to-date website to help you to more easily access their erotic and emotional stories of love and romance. There were admittedly some problems with the old site and I just want to point out that anyone who wanted to buy a copy of my November release, The Better to Eat You With, (or any other Red Sage title) but had a problem accessing the link, I'm happy to let you know that the glitches are fixed. You can now get your very own copy of my twisted take on the Little Red Riding Hood tale. Be sure to check out the new website.

And don't forget to stop over to the Red Sage Revealed blog. All month Red Sage authors are blogging about their hottest heroes and heroines and giving away free books as well!

Nothing is more romantic than a kiss. It's so intimate, lips brushing, breaths mingling, bodies only a heartbeat away, or maybe pressed up against each other. I love romantic movies and movie kisses get me everytime.

I’m up for some good romantic movies to watch this February, um and the other 11 months of the year. I'm ready to add … [Link]

The Otherworld Diner » You either get it . . . or you don’t.

Monday 1 February 22:38:00 UTC 2010

It was a bleak, snowy weekend here in Virginia. Twelve inches of the powdery white stuff and a bone chilling twenty-eight degrees to keep any of it from melting any time soon. The kids were outside having a ball with all their neighborhood friends. It should have been a perfect time for me to write, all curled up by the fire with my laptop and a cup of hot tea. But that’s not what I did . . . exactly. Oh, I had the laptop and the hot tea, but instead of writing I was watching a marathon of LOST episodes online so that I could get caught up for the final season that starts tomorrow.

As I finished the last episode of season 5, I had to wonder to myself why I even like the show. Mind you, I don’t watch much TV to begin with. Between my husband and son with ESPN and my daughter with the Animal Planet, I seldom get a chance at the remote in my house. But LOST was the one show I started watching from the beginning and stayed faithfully with for the last 4 seasons. I don’t know what happened to season 5. Somehow I got behind and never had the chance to catch up until now.

But back to why I love LOST. To be honest, I haven’t the foggiest idea. By all rights, the show should have driven me crazy with its smoke monster, talking dead people, conspiracies on the island … [Link]

One of the links that turned up on my feed this morning was a friend linking to Mike Resnick's article about his days in the 1960s/1970s porn novel business. Because we were also cooking for Morgana and Brian, I sautéed the shrimp for the Pad Thai separately, and put tofu directly in the Pad Thai for some texture.Now, what do I do with 2/3 of a block of tofu? Monday 1 February 18:00:41 UTC 2010

Last year Samhain started a new annual award for each year's releases. As you may have guessed from the title, the award is called the Sammy.

There are all sorts of categories — best selling, etc. But there is also a "Reader's Choice" category where you get to vote for your favorite. Now, I have two books on that list – Private Property and Personal Protection – and I'd love to say go vote for me and be all rah-rah-in-your-face about how great they are. But frankly, there are a LOT of really good books up there deserving of your vote. You get to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. Books like Maya Banks' Songbird, or any of Lorelei James' RoughRider books. Deidre Knight's Butterfly Tattoo. Lauren Dane, Cathryn Fox, Vivian Arend, Inez Kelley, Catherine Wade … there's so many GREAT authors and great books to choose from on that list.

So head over here and cast your vote… [Link]

Emma Petersen » Music Monday: Because I loves the Pink

Monday 1 February 17:24:25 UTC 2010

Morning Loverlies!

How are you all doing this lovely morning? Well, I hope because Emma doing pretty fanfriggintastic. Why? Good God, I don’t know but it makes the masochist in me nervous. Seriously, that’s fucked up but hey, it is what it is. So today’s Music Monday here at Casa Chez Emma’s. I had so many choices to chose from but I went with a favorite. Pink. I’ve always loved the color pink, it’s delicious and let’s be honest, so is the singer.

I don’t know if Sober is one of my fav vids because its so dark, because I get 2 Pinks for the price of one or because Pink is doing Pink. All of those are pretty damn good reasons though. I’m just saying. So sit back and enjoy! Oooh! And before I forget, the winner of Larissa Ione’s book (from her backlist) is the MJ and Spike loving Zoe Winters. Congrats. And don’t worry duckies if you didn’t win! You’ll get another chance tomorrow and Wednesday to win some yummy delicious books when Emma Does hilarious and virtue selling Alisha Rai (Tuesday) and the incorrigible and zombilicious Mark Henry (Wednesday).

To Eureka Family Practice
Okay. It’s bad enough that it took you all a year to diagnose my gall bladder disease. And then you told me that, even though I was forty and wanted no more children, I was too young to have a hysterectomy despite the fact I was in massive pain every month. It’s bad enough that every, single Nurse Practitioner and one doctor I’ve seen in the last three years is GONE. But this? This was the last fucking straw.
My ear hurts. A lot. The only thing that will drag me into the doctor is SEVERE pain. I hate the doctor. I can’t swallow. Eating hurts. I’m close to going to the ER, but I don’t want to take my non-critical cold into the emergency room. So, I call you.
Yep. I have an ear infection. A bad one. Needs antibiotics. Three times a day for ten days. Right. Codeine cough syrup and we’re good. I ask “Is there anything I need to do for my prescriptions? Or are you going to call it in?”
Nurse Practitioner says “Nope. We’ll call it in. You pick it up.”
“Today, right?” It’s Friday at 4:30pm. I thought I’d better ask.
“Yes, today. Go up to the front and make an appointment for a full physical.”
I go up front. Make my appointments. And then I ask, “And you’ll call in my prescriptions?”
“Yes.”
“To the Fortuna Rite Aide?”
“That’s what we have here.”
“Awesome.”

Jina Bacarr presents Cleopatra's Perfume: The Prequel » A Naughty Victorian Lady writes her even naughtier memoir

Monday 1 February 16:00:35 UTC 2010

by Lady Carlton nĂ©e Katie O’Roarke, heroine of The Blonde Samurai”

Naughty memoir? Could there be a more sensual title to make you continue reading?

You shall see for yourself as I present to you the opening passages of “The Blonde Samurai:”

“San Francisco

15 September 1876

” ‘Tis not an easy task I have, dear lady reader, to respond to the vicious gossip spread about me through Mayfair drawing rooms since I returned to England. Whispers of euphoric nights with not one but two men pleasuring me; mysterious items to soothe a woman’s burning need for clitoral touch and fill her with orgasmic bliss; the erotic game of domination with girls strapped down and flogged upon their bare buttocks.

“Did I take part in these wild imaginings? Or are they merely tales fabricated by a besotted male scribbler to sell his stories and make his fortune?

“You be the judge as you continue to read, and I hope you will, for pages and pages of erotic delights await you. What is undisputed is that I ran away from my husband and disappeared. Some say I went mad and was confined to an asylum. Others insist I entered a convent.

“Neither is true, but the scandal I provoked shook the standards of bland respectability and sobriety that govern the upper class and started nonstop discussions about what they deemed to be my outrageous behavior and what should be done about it.

“Done about it? As …

Nine Naughty Novelists » The Journey of 10,000 Steps

Monday 1 February 14:30:00 UTC 2010

Like almost everybody else in the country during the first months of the year, I’m trying to get back in shape through diet and exercise. Since lots of other people are doing the same thing, there are also a lot of experts on TV and in the newspapers right now cheering us on and/or giving us tips. Avoid white foods, they say (oh, you mean like cauliflower and tofu? No problem). Keep a food diary, they say (so do I include the samples at the grocery store or are those free calories since I consume them while pushing my cart?). And for exercise, just walk 10,000 steps a day, and you’ll be fine.

This last one is the one that really gets me right now. It’s always delivered with a bright smile and an “exercise is much easier than you think” introduction. Just 10,000 steps, they say, implying that you must already be doing around 9,000 or so. 10,000 is just a slight bump upward. Right?

Okay, this is what they don’t tell you. Ten thousand steps is equivalent to around four to five miles for the average person. Now some jobs and some lifestyles may actually include four to five miles of walking per day—my guess is that ER nurses may do something like that, and maybe waitresses in big restaurants. But most of us? Nah.

According to my trusty pedometer, if I don’t hit the treadmill, I usually do around 2,000 steps, or 3,000 if I’m running around …

Short and Sweet

Do you find yourself skipping over portions of books? Do you tend to buy shorter 200-300 page books rather than the larger tomes? Why?

I asked myself that question a while ago when I finished a book by a well-known author. The book was over 500 pages and action packed from beginning to end. The main character(s) were constantly on the move and under time crunch to “save” something (the world/another person, it doesn’t matter). Yet I found myself skipping large portions of the book.

Why? Information dump.

I love history. I love conspiracy theories. I love tangled webs. But put them all together and add a fiction plot and more often than not I am disappointed in the book. Make the book a romance on top of that and things can get really tricky.

I feel for authors who are excited about the information, the legend, the myth, and in some cases, the history surrounding an event. It’s a tightrope walk to figure out what is important and what isn’t. I often think the author is more in love with the facts and information than with the characters of the book. The author is so eager to share his/her fascination with the details that they forget they are writing something that is for the beach or the sofa rather than the classroom. The number one thing I dislike more than anything when reading a book for pleasure is to be lectured to. Having an author lecture his/her …

The Samhellion Newsletter » Page not found » Interview: Lisa Cooke

Monday 1 February 12:15:09 UTC 2010

This month, The Samhellion welcomes historical romance author Lisa Cooke. Her first book, Texas Hold Him, was released in April 2009 from Dorchester Publishing’s Leisure Historicals. Dorchester will also release A Midwife Crisis in April. In addition, her short story “The Redemption of Brodie Grant” will appear in Berkley’s June 2010 benefit anthology, The Gift of Love.

Why historical? They seem to be a tough sell these days.

I started my love for reading in the 1980s when historicals dominated the market. I think that influenced my writing, but I also love the strong alpha males associated with the historical time periods. Something about a sword wielding highlander or knight on a white horse that simply makes the knees go weak.

Do you have an “elevator speech”? What is it?

For my newest release, my elevator pitch/log line is: “My story is about an Appalachian midwife who suddenly finds herself with three fiancés. A MIDWIFE CRISIS is available now from Dorchester Publishing.”

How would you describe your writing style?

I write humorous historicals with sexy alpha males. Most of my books have an element of suspense and mystery, though A MIDWIFE CRISIS is more of a hearth-and-home type of story.

What’s the worst mistake you’ve ever made in your writing career? What’s the best?

Luckily, I haven’t made any truly disastrous decisions. The worst would probably be trying to write what everyone else was writing. Each chapter in my first …

Monday 1 February 12:12:10 UTC 2010

For many people 2009 seems to have been a tough year, and I count myself as one of them. It seemed I was under the curse, “May you live in interesting times.” Many things, from the small to the huge, went sideways, and my health and quality of life, along with my nerves and good humour, were suffering. I decided 2010 would be different, but wasn’t at all sure how to go about making that happen. Resolutions? Fergeddaboudit. They’ve never worked for me. I’m too perverse! Tell me I’m GOING to do something is the best way (after saying I HAVE to) to make sure it doesn’t get done.

While in the midst of this conundrum, I went to have coffee with a woman I first came in contact with through a writer’s group. We’d been trying to get together for a couple of months, but stuff kept getting in the way. Finally we were able to find a mutually agreeable time to meet, ostensibly to talk craft and on-going projects. Both of us had stalled in our writing schedules and felt the need for a kick in the pants. What I got, however, was far more precious, and something I now find invaluable—a new way to look at life!

Ruth is a Buddhist, and during the course of our conversation, while I was complaining how hard I found it to let go of things and move on to what needed to be done, she said, quoting one of her teachers, …

Monday 1 February 12:10:12 UTC 2010

With the rising cost of food today, well, the rising cost of everything, when I go shopping I always look for the least expensive ways to cook healthy food. Macaroni and cheese out of the blue box can be had for under a dollar, but what about a special occasion? Below is a simple, cost effective menu that tastes great and takes less than fifteen minutes of prep time.

Honey Dijon Salmon Fillets

Ingredients:

(4) 3 oz. Salmon fillets (I use frozen and I don’t thaw them first. Check out Walmart’s frozen salmon fillets. They are individually wrapped and you can buy four for $3.99)

½ cup Honey

Spicy Dijon Mustered

Salt and pepper to taste

½ cup chopped pecans or almonds

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using an 8×8 or 9×9 glass baking dish, lightly spray with cooking oil. Place salmon in dish, skin side down.

Put honey in small mixing bowl and stir in spicy Dijon mustered to taste. I prefer mine to have a little kick – it gives a great balance to the sweetness of the honey and the fresh flavor of the fish. You can make it sweeter or spicier, which ever your family would prefer.

Pour honey/Dijon sauce over fish. Salt and pepper to taste. I don’t cook with salt so this is optional. Top with chopped pecans. Bake 20 to 35 minutes until fish is flaky. Frozen takes longer than thawed fish so keep an eye on it.

The Samhellion Newsletter » Page not found » Squalls and Hallways and Obstacles…Oh My!!! by CJ England

Monday 1 February 12:10:10 UTC 2010

When I saw the call out for this article, I just had to respond. Since my tagline is “Follow Your Dreams”, I figured it was the perfect topic for me to do my first Samhellion article.

“It is impossible to discourage the real writers-they don’t give a damn about what you say, they’re going to write.” ~Sinclair Lewis~

This is one of my favorite quotes and so very true. I’ve been writing ever since I could read and I can’t imagine not putting “pen to paper” for any reason. But, like most authors, there have been times where things got in the way of my dreams. Sometimes it was big things, like a new job or a new baby that took up all my time. Or it could be something smaller, like a bad headache or the power going out and I couldn’t use my computer.

But, in most cases, those of us who “follow the dream” do so because we can’t do anything else. Writing is in our hearts and souls and we write in order to be whole. And, when difficulties come up, we do what needs to be done to continue on the path we’ve chosen.

Not that it is easy. Fighting through obstacles can be time consuming, discouraging and painful. Sometimes we may not make it through the first time. So we have to gird ourselves a second time and push through to the finish line.

“History has demonstrated that the most …

Monday 1 February 12:09:15 UTC 2010

I was critiquing a chapter for one of my critique partner’s and she used a term incorrectly. And it’s no wonder that she did, the media misuses the same term constantly. So if you’ve been misusing it as well, you aren’t the only one. I’ve even seen authors who should know better, authors who have some knowledge about guns and have characters who are VERY knowledgeable about weapons, use it. The term I’m referring to is “clip”.

What most people are calling a clip? Is not a clip it’s a magazine. A clip and a magazine are completely different things but are often used as interchangeable. A semi-automatic pistol has a magazine, just like Newsweek, People or Cosmo, not a clip. A magazine is essentially a container that stores ammo. I believe I’ve heard of buildings housing ammo referred to as a magazine as well. The easiest way to explain it in regards to actual weapons is that a magazine has a spring, which probably means nothing to you unless you’ve handled a magazine. There are fixed magazines and detachable ones. The ones I’m referring to in regards to movies and fiction is the detachable magazine of a semi automatic. So, Lets concentrate on that. I’ve included pictures. It’s the part that you see actors slapping into the end of a gun to load it or dropping out of a gun when they are out of ammo.

This is a magazine:

Embrace the Shadows » Clash of the Covers 2.1.10

Monday 1 February 12:04:39 UTC 2010

First of all, congratulations to Dangerous Highlander by Donna Grant for winning last week’s Clash!

And now to see which covers we picked for this week’s Clash.

What Sandra Sookoo says:

Initial reaction? Loved the watch and the idea of a time travel Valentine story. After that, my attention stuck on the hero. Now there’s a guy you wouldn’t mind spending the most romantic day of the year with. This cover draws you into the scene and you want to know more.

What Barbara J. Hancock says:

Okay, I’ll be honest. This cover doesn’t make me want to just read this book. It makes me want to write a book. Doesn’t she capture your imagination? The haunted looking forest, her despair, the wind in her hair…I can’t wait to meet this girl and find out what’s happening in her life.

What Susan Blexrud says:

Winterborn features a house reminiscent of Psycho, a pool of skulls, and a splash of misty red in the middle. What’s not to terrify? You know this is one scary book.

Star-Crossed Romance » Guest – J.L. Wilson

Monday 1 February 11:15:12 UTC 2010

Good morning everyone! We have a very interesting article today about world building and how to keep track of your details from author J.L. Wilson. Here's a link for contact information – J.L. Wilson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, there — I'm J L Wilson, and some of you may know me as a mystery writer ("Mystery with a touch of romance; romance with a touch of gray"). I'm also an author of two different paranormal series. One, the History Patrol, is all about reincarnation where people are sent back in time to resolve reincarnation issues. The other is The New Human Intercession, which is set on another planet far in the future.
I read my first romance novel in 2003 and sold my first romance novel in 2006. I did a LOT of reading in between! Plus I found several supportive writers' groups, critique partners, and others who helped me along the way. One thing I learned from the authors who write paranormal fiction is the importance of keeping all the facts straight in my books. My technique for world-building is similar for both series. It’s all in the details and how you keep track of your details.
I jot notes in notebooks, which I usually keep with me at all times. I buy small notebooks at craft stores and use those (usually 5×7 size). I now have a bookcase full of them. I do the same thing for my mystery stories: a notebook that contains character descriptions, location descriptions, pictures cut from magazines — anything … [Link]
Taste of Kiwi » Scarlet Woman Tour Starts Today with Big Cats at Book Junkie
Monday 1 February 11:07:37 UTC 2010
I’m going out on tour again!
This time it’s with one of my earlier titles, and the very first book in my famous Middlemarch Mates series….Scarlet Woman.
The tour starts at Book Junkie where I’m talking about the big cats that inspired my series—the black leopard.
As usual, I’m doing a giveaway, and this time, the winner can choose any one of the ebooks from my Middlemarch series. Come along and join in the party!
And meantime, here’s the blurb for Scarlet Woman:
Emily Scarlet’s husband left her for his secretary and died in a car accident—all on the same day. Now, six months later, Emily has emerged from her chrysalis of painful memories. And to prove she has what it takes to attract a man, she’s determined to experience one perfect night of passion.
Feline shape shifter, Saber Mitchell has a problem with his four boisterous younger brothers. They’re out of control. It’s too late for him, but he hopes to get his brothers mated and settled, and the ball is the place to introduce them to marriageable women.
Unbridled sex is the last thing he plans on, but one glimpse of Emily Scarlet changes his mind. Sex with her is a necessity. They dance. They make love.
One thing is clear—a single night isn’t enough. Saber must have her for his mate, but Emily isn’t so easy to convince…or trust.
Beyond the Veil » Odd Dreams and Wild Things
Monday 1 February 9:21:00 UTC 2010
In the annals of wild dreams, I'm sitting on the mother lode most days. I dream in vivid color and exquiste detail. Most of the time they aren't very cohesive though, so that sucks, but hey, I can still glean little germs of wisdom or awesome story ideas from them.
So, when I woke up yesterday after sleeping maybe five hours after my shift ended at 7am, I felt as if I'd been through a half-broken looking glass. The dream I had was so disturbing, but not for reasons you may think. There wasn't blood and gore. I wasn't being chased by some psycho with a butcher knife or even hunted by a wild animal. No, not me.
I was Chicken Little.
Not the actual CL. I mean I didn't have feathers or a beak. I was me, but having an experience that shook me as if the sky were falling. Worse. Large objects were falling at me. Like guns you'd find on battleships. The barrel. The big damn barrel coming straight at me as I look up into the clear blue sky.
Why?
And more disturbing was the fact that as these objects were hurling themselves at me from outer space, I stood there open-mouthed waiting for the thing to land and make the loud vibrating sound of impact with the earth. However, there was no sound. No impact. It just sort of disappeared when it should have landed. And the tidals waves that should have occurred when this gun barrel hit the water, … [Link]
Beth is a fellow Bradford Bunch author and a newly discovered addition to my must-read list, and she has a new book out tomorrow! She agreed to answer a few questions and she's going to give away a free download of her recent Samhain release, Holiday Bound to one lucky commenter, so be sure to say hi! I'll draw the winner Tuesday morning, so check back then.
RELEASE
Publisher: Berkley Heat
Genre: Contemporary
Release Date: February 2, 2010
His need for her was so absolute, he agreed to share her with another man in order to possess her.
Genny loved her husband Max, but something was missing—a sexual charge that was instead ignited by his business partner, Sean. He was ruggedly handsome, with a heart-stopping smile and a slow, sexy New Orleans drawl that made Genny weak. The more time they spent together, the stronger the attraction between them became and when her husband offered to share her with Sean for one intoxicating night, both Genny and Sean were too tempted to refuse.
That night in the company penthouse, Max and Sean showed Genny the heights of ecstasy. But it was Sean who scored her very spirit, and one-on-one, they were red hot. But as Genny learns, there’s a price to pay for such impulsive pleasure. What began as a night of forbidden desire spirals into a whirlpool of murder, sensual submission, secrets, and a scorching passion that threatens to consume everyone it touches.
Taste of Kiwi » The Wild Child With Heart
Monday 1 February 8:06:43 UTC 2010
Welcome to the New Release Monday. This month, in addition to our typical excerpt week, we’re showcasing new releases by several fabulous EM writers. Excerpt Monday site! or click on the banner to the left.
Wild Child by Shelley Munro
Wild Child is available for sale on 2 Feb at All Romance eBooks. I’m really excited about the release of Wild Child because it’s part of the 28 Days of Heart promotion, and all the proceeds from the sale of this book go to the American Heart Association.
I was born with a heart murmur and spent several days during my childhood and teen years undergoing day-long tests and doctor visits at an Auckland hospital. I’m one of the lucky ones, because my murmur has never stopped me doing anything I’ve wanted to do–I’ve lived a happy and relatively healthy life.
I hope you’ll support this worthy cause, and buy my book, or one or more of the other 28 books that will be on sale at All Romance eBooks this month.
Here’s the blurb for Wild Child:
Seize the day…
ZoĂ« Underwood loved Matt Cantrell from the moment her mother married his father. She definitely thinks of him as more than a big brother and even though he moved away from home the moment their parents got married, her feelings for him have grown stronger, bigger. More. No one presses her buttons like the tall, dark and gorgeous Matt. If only he can get over the eight-year age …
