Leah Braemel » Input needed on Changes to the Blog

Wednesday 27 January 4:21:00 UTC 2010

As you may have noticed I've changed the blog's status to over-18 so you now have to get through that extra warning page. I've done this since many of you have commented on how you like to read my guests' excerpts. But given that many of my guests write erotica and provide explicit excerpts I felt it best to make sure you're warned in advance.

I’ve also just realized Blogger has the ability to provide a "read more" split, so I can put excerpts "beneath the fold" so to speak.

Please let me know in the comments section what your preferences are regarding the excerpts – do you like them? Or would you prefer a link?

Do you want the whole article in one piece, or would you prefer the post to just have the top part shown with a "read more" click required before the excerpt?

I won't know what you like–or don't like–unless you tell me. [Link]

Erotic Romance Author Red Garnier talks about romance, life, books, travel » THE SATIN SASH – 5 ribbons from Romance Junkies

Wednesday 27 January 2:41:20 UTC 2010

I just found out that THE SATIN SASH has a new review from Romance Junkies, and it’s fantastic!

5 Ribbons!

Here’s a snippet from the review (to be posted on the RomanceJunkies site very soon):

The Satin Sash by Red Garnier
5 Blue Ribbons
December 1, 2009
NAL Trade
ISBN: 9780451228031

Readers who enjoy the mĆ©nage romance genre should flock to the stores for Red Garnier’s latest, THE SATIN SASH. When Antonia relinquishes her red sash to Heath, will she and Grey’s flaming hot relationship survive?

I never expected the range of emotions I would feel upon reading THE SATIN SASH. I knew it was a mĆ©nage romance. I knew it would be blistering hot and very erotic. What I didn’t expect was the fact that I would have no choice but to think about THE SATIN SASH for days after I finished reading it. I couldn’t get the love scenes out of my mind. The passions of Grey, Antonia, and Heath grabbed me right in the heart and I found myself wholly engulfed by this tumultuous and tantalizing novel. The sexual intensity and raw emotions of these amorous characters just made THE SATIN SASH authentic for me. Expertly written love scenes so blazing hot I blushed, THE SATIN SASH is at the top of my list as books that I will read over and over again.

Lilli Feisty :: Blog » Wicked Sexy!

Wednesday 27 January 0:14:28 UTC 2010

And that’s exactly what this book is! It’s by my good friend and amazing author, R.G.! Here’s the blurb:
Something magic this way comes…

Wicked ³, Book 1

Callie has always known the Abbotts were different. Witches, though they call themselves ā€œMagiansā€. They are her second family. Harrison Abbott has been her best friend since they were children. Tucker Abbott, her life-long crush. And their brother, Tyghe? A magical pain in her backside.

When the Abbotts need her human perspective to solve a mystery, she doesn’t hesitate. Especially since it means getting everything she ever wanted. A chance to be one of them, to have magic, even if it’s only temporary.

Someone is attacking young women at Triune, a ritual that helps Magians find their perfect threesome—the match that will complete their magic and their hearts. Callie expected to be dazzled by her first glimpse into the Magian world, but the bone-melting desire between her and the Abbott brothers isn’t part of the plan.

Nor is the decades-old secret that makes her the target of a killer…

Warning: Explicit sex, magical dresses, mind-reading rooms and mind-boggling threesomes.

Around The Writer's Block » Pop Open the Bubbly!

Tuesday 26 January 21:14:02 UTC 2010

I’m very excited. I belong to Romance Writers of America. I joined years ago when I first made the decision to become a writer of romance. There is some credibility it gives you when you’re sending manuscripts out to agents and publishing houses. (Caveat: MANY talented and successful romance writers never join RWA.) The biggest reason I wanted to join though was so I could be part of my local writing chapter which has supported me through all my successes and struggles.

Anyway …

There are a lot of things about the organization that rub me the wrong way. (Which is why you’ll see my green ribbon for RWA Change.) One of the biggest being that they don’t seem to know what to do with romance authors published in electronic format despite the fact that the market is EXPLODING thanks to ereaders like the Kindle from Amazon and the Nook from Barnes & Nobel. But I have to say I admired them for the consistency. Last year they followed their own guidelines and actually dumped Harlequin as a recognized publisher because they were opening a self-publishing line and it was tied in with the rest of the business. (RWA does not consider an author published who has paid to have their own work put into print.)

Again, I digress …

There are several levels of membership in the RWA. The PRO level which means you’ve actually finished a manuscript and had it rejected and continue to work toward publication. …

My Mind Wanders… » Tuesday Temptations

Tuesday 26 January 20:23:00 UTC 2010

So it occurs to me that it's Tue and its been quite a little while since I posted a temptation. Bad Serena! Clearly, I need to work on my blogging skills. :)

What to post though? There are sooo many things out there that tempt me, call to me, beg to be shown.

Okay, here goes, a little list of some of the things that tempt me…

*Long hours to spend wandering aimlessly though a bookstore and/or library.
*Music – classical, Rock & Roll, easy listening, Disco(yep, I said it. There are indeed a few disco songs that I adore.)
*Chocolate – need I say more here. ;)
*Paranormal books, movies, TV shows – the stranger the better!
*Eyes – filled with so much emotion and all different.
*Shoulders – sturdy and strong affording the loves of his life protection.
*Puppy love – literally. When my pups look at me full of love, I cave. Doggie treats all around and lots of baby talk. :0

That’s just a few of the things that tempt this lady. What about ya'll, what tempts you? [Link]

Naughty and Spice Blog » All A-Twitter

Tuesday 26 January 17:40:06 UTC 2010

I have so FREAKING MUCH To do today! Are you tired of hearing me say that? Heee! Cuz I’m tired of saying it. Some interesting rambly stuff via Twitter:
A) You can follow the #DBW hash to keep up with the Digital Book World (Conference?) Didn’t know about this but/so I’m guessing it’s a conference. Lots of interesting food for thought re: book pirates.
B) Speaking of Book Pirates I Googled a friend’s name last night and discovered links to illegal downloads of her books….ON FACEBOOK!
C) One of her books had been “Read” almost 5000 times. (assuming this was a MMPB that sells for 6.99 and my friend gets 8% royalty on each sale of that book, she just lost $2750.00).

Happy Release Day Feisty!

D) I have no answers for piracy but one thing I DO wish would happen (as effective as it probably would be) is that when sites like Facebook/Blogger discover links to illegal downloads, they would ban the users. Same for file-sharing sites who discover users posting links to illegal downloads.

E) Speculating, after a quick discussion w/ Jackie Barbosa, I kind of wonder if we’re about to see the demise of the hardcover book as we know it? (Thanks to epublishing and piracy?). As I remember, King’s first book sale was paperback and paperback used to be where it was at, then (again as I recall from The History of Writing 101), a couple of things happened (namely the buyout/conglomeritization – yes I made …

Jax's Artistic Journey… » Rad Research

Tuesday 26 January 17:30:00 UTC 2010

As a teenager I hated doing research and I tried to avoid it at every opportunity! Funny how in my writing career I've discovered research is the most important thing necessary to bring a story to life. It's the extra ingredient that brings flavor and life into your simmering stew. It's also the hint of sweetness that glides across your taste buds so easily that you can feel every perfect explosion of luxurious grapes and know they were made especially for that vintage bottle of wine…

My current contemporary proposal is set in a fictitious vineyard surrounding the city of Montalcino. My wine of choice is the exclusive Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one", a red wine that is ranked among one of the world's best wines. It is normally reserved for the affluent, or stowed away for special occasions. I must admit–I've had a taste of 'said wine' and it's worth every penny….I'm salivating just thinking of it.

When I think of wineries and vineyards, I think of centuries of tradition. I think of pride and loyalty. I think of passion and love. There's something extraordinary about the wine making process and something so sexy about learning the philosophies and culture of these people. They live and breathe wine like writers approach their craft and writing. Wine is their life. It's magical and it's the reason I am so drawn to the world I've created in this story.

My research usually begins with a single photograph and from there, … [Link]

Fierce Romance » Do You Love a Man Who Cooks?

Tuesday 26 January 15:23:00 UTC 2010

We all know how men love those huge, fancy grills, not to mention cooking on an open campfire, right? (I can hear Tim Allen grunting now.) Usually you will find men cooking some sort of meat, the red kind with lots of fat. Maybe a hamburger or a high quality steak. Either way, it seems like a primitive, he-man kind of thing, doesn’t it? He’s providing for his woman.

I love it when my husband cooks for me, and he’s highly skilled. Chili and the best steak I’ve ever eaten are his specialties. I can’t even eat steak at restaurants anymore because it’s always disappointing. He’s spoiled me. I’m craving one now!

The hero of my latest release, Kilted Lover, grills for the heroine… and he's wearing a kilt at the time. He’s saved her life, hidden her away on a small motor yacht, it’s nighttime, and… well, they have to eat, right? He wouldn’t want her to starve after all those high-speed car chases, getting shot at, etc. Besides, he’s had the steak marinating for a long while and it’s guaranteed to be tender and delicious. Needless to say, the heroine is impressed with his cooking skills and enjoying eating the food he’s prepared. But she’s wishing she could nibble on him instead. He’s trying really hard to be a good boy.

Excerpt from Kilted Lover:

ā€œI’m sorry I’m putting you through so much trouble. I’m sure you’d rather be someplace else.ā€
ā€œNo. I was planning to stay here tonight anyway. Are you hungry?ā€ … [Link]

Samhain Weblog » Be gentle… it's my first time.

Tuesday 26 January 14:50:49 UTC 2010

Wow. I bet I know where your mind just went. Of course, mine did too, but I’m allowed. I get paid for thinking naughty thoughts, at least if I can turn them into marketable stories. Nearly anyone can tell a tale; be foolish enough to ask your great-aunt about her last shopping trip, and you’ll hear the saga of the mislabeled support hose and the extremely rude cashier in great detail. You’re obliged to listen. If you’re lucky, you might get a laugh out of it. But would you spend your hard earned pennies on her recounting? Unlikely. Good writers, on the other hand, have you rushing for your wallet on release day.

Am I a good writer? I’d like to think so. I hope you’ll think so too, should you be kind enough to give Crimson a try. It comes out today, and I’m incredibly nervous. Like a young girl planning her wedding, I’ve imagined this day for years. I’ve dreamed of enthusiastic letters from fans and critics singing my praises. In my wildest fantasies, favorite authors come to my book-signing with well-thumbed copies of my bestseller in hand. I’ve picture scribbling my name for them and waltzing back to my office to start my next romance, a smile-plastered on my face and my head held high.

In reality, I find myself biting my lip a lot. I have to refrain from chewing my nails. Will you cheer on the men I’ve created? When their story ends, will you hunger …

Nine Naughty Novelists » Guest Blogger Juniper Bell – News Flash: Cat Person Learns to Like a Dog

Tuesday 26 January 14:30:00 UTC 2010

This is a blog I never thought I’d write. Since I ought to be writing about my new release, ā€œDoll,ā€ the fact that I’m talking cats and dogs tells you this is an earth-shattering event.

I, Juniper Bell, lifelong lover of cats, sad owner of the late lamented Otis, scoffer at puppy antics, disliker of dog hair, vower of oath never to follow any animal around with a pooper-scooper … am happily dog-sitting a boisterous beast named Bubba.

Of course, I call him either Bubbalicious or Buddha, but he doesn’t seem to mind.

As a writer, I’ve always connected more to cats, who are independent and sleep most of the time. I like pets I don’t have to pay a lot of attention to. I’m not the only one. According to Barbara Holland, ā€œA catless writer is almost inconceivable.ā€ Robertson Davies says, ā€œ Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons.ā€

I know plenty of authors who love dogs and even put them in their books. I admit I usually skip those parts.

So how did Bubba the Dog worm his way into my heart?

He’s wonderfully patient with our five-year-old, who adores him. Bubba lets her rain kisses all over his face. He lets her curl up with him in a tangled heap. He lets her teach him tricks like ā€œshake handsā€ and ā€œhowl along to the harmonica.ā€

Bubba’s a lover not a fighter. He gets along with …

Kiss and Tell » Release Day! Sugar Rush

Tuesday 26 January 13:55:00 UTC 2010

Yep! This is it! The day we've all been waiting for! Okay well, the day I'VE been waiting for! Sugar Rush is now out from Loose Id!

This book has been a process and at this time, at this writing, it is my longest novella to date. There's longer coming down the pike, but… Writing longer has been a lesson in patience. It has been a lesson in flow and planning and yes, even some plotting. I know, I know. I'm a pantser. Until, that is, I get just beyond halfway and then I start plotting, planning, to the end.

I have learned a lot about my writing over the last few months and about my storytelling. I am growing as a writer and it's an interesting journey. And when your editor and your managing editor both tell you that they see growth from one book to the next…well, there's really no better compliment and it's helped to keep me going even when there's been rough spots. So, thanks to Jana and Christy for their support.

Sugar Rush is a straight contemporary male/female erotic romance. As you can probably guess from the title, there's something about sugar in…truffles, to be exact. Yum, right? I know. Dark chocolate truffles with a hint of spice from peppers.

Here's the blurb for you:

The Otherworld Diner » Interview with Author Michelle Pillow

Tuesday 26 January 13:46:57 UTC 2010

1) Briefly, who are you as an author and what do you write?

Michelle: I’m Michelle M. Pillow, Author of All Things Romance. Like the tagline says, I write in all genres, subgenres and mixed genres of romance, from sweet to super sexy. Some of my more popular works include paranormal, futuristics, historicals, fantasies, contemporaries and several combinations thereof. I’ve contracted well over 60 books of romantic fiction. Readers can learn more about me here: http://www.michellepillow.com/

I also write articles and interviews for Paranormal Underground Magazine. Like the name implies, it’s paranormal non-romance. http://www.paranormalunderground.net/

2) What do you do (voluntarily) when you're not writing?

I’m an avid photographer. I’ve been doing it longer than writing, in fact. So I love taking pictures, as well as research, learning new things, experiencing new things, traveling. One of my last non-work trips was a 3000 mile drive across the USA. I think that’s why I love writing. It’s an opportunity to explore and learn.

If at home, I love movies from the old classic Hollywood to today, musicals to horror films (go zombies!).

3) What's your favorite deadline snack?

Michelle: Coffee with cream. If someone doesn’t bring me food I can forget to eat.

4) What is it about paranormal romance? How do you feel paranormal elements enhance the romance and vice versa?

Michelle: I think in our modern age a lot of the mystery is gone. Science has explained so much. But that doesn’t mean it’s explained it all. I think we, as humans, need the … [Link]

Embrace the Shadows » If You Can Read This…The Prince Fell Off.

Tuesday 26 January 13:00:33 UTC 2010

A few years back I watched, butter drenched popcorn in hand, as Kate Beckinsale tumbled and crashed her way down through a tree to land on her feet. In high heels and a leather corset. And her reaction: shake her head in exasperation and surge back to her feet, ready for more. I thought, ā€œI want to write about a chick like that.ā€ So my resulting heroine, Kel Sheridan, in More Than Blood, completely did that for me. She was dangerous, intelligent and capable. And a total smart ass. What’s not to love? Well Silhouette Nocturne certainly found something…the hero. I got that dreaded rejection letter after a request for a full and nearly a year of waiting. Their number one complaint was that my hero wasn’t ā€œalphaā€ enough. I was totally devastated. I mean, I loved my heroine. To make the hero any more ā€œalphaā€ I would have to diminish the hard earned potency of this incredible female character. And true to my innate ability to evolve; I ignored them and took it somewhere else. But seriously, who says the heroine has to be weak and helpless in order for the hero to be strong? Much of today’s media has strong leading women at its center, from Hollywood movies to Prime Time television and the supporting man is no less wallpaper worthy because of it. I mean, who doesn’t drool over Nathan Fillion’s character in Castle opposite the strong and capable Detective Beckett? Or fantasize about the delicious Hugh … [Link]

Donna Grant » Guest Stephanie Tyler

Tuesday 26 January 12:00:18 UTC 2010

I’m so pleased to have Stephanie Tyler guest blogging again. If you haven’t read the books in her uber awesome Hard to Hold books, then you are certainly missing out on the hunkiest of military men – SEALs! I can’t say enough about these books or Stephanie.

Thanks to Donna for having me back on her blog!

So, today I was thinking about online friendships…you know, the non-online world always looks at me kind of funny when I tell them that Larissa Ione and I met through an online writer’s group. Like, they think, what if she’s crazy or something and you don’t know?

Well, she is, but the good kind of crazy.

A lot of my writer friendships started and continue online (case in point – Donna!) I love going into bookstores or see someone reading a book from an author I know from online – it makes me want to yell out, I know her!

Okay, sometimes I do say it. I try not to yell, but hey, I’m a total fangirl, even with those authors I know. It’s just so cool to spot books by friends, to have them on my shelves (and say, I know her, I know her, I know her too) when non-writing friends go through my shelves looking for something to read.

I’ve noticed that readers who’ve met online form the same kind of friendships. You know, sometimes the anonymity of the internet can make people mean – say things they’d never, ever …

Building Castles – Kelly Jamieson's Blog » Aaaaand…I got 2 more reviews!

Tuesday 26 January 11:00:00 UTC 2010

I just have to say, I am blown away by the reviews I've been getting lately! This just rocks my little world.

Night Owl Reviews gave RIGGER 5 stars and a TOP PICK!

“While I don’t always appreciate all the aspects of BDSM, I do appreciate a good love story and this is a good one… What came across was the special relationship between Alek and Shaela and how it was evolving into something new and different. As they explored each other and their limits, you could appreciate the journey they were taking. I thoroughly enjoyed this best friends to lovers story. Excellent job."

and…

Joyfully Reviewed says:

“I…wasn’t able to stop reading the book once I started because I liked each character so much and wanted to see how events would turn out with them. Of course, it would be remiss of me to write about a book called Irish Sex Fairy without mentioning, well, the sex. Ms. Jamieson certainly knows how to heat up the page, blending eroticism with tenderness in ways that made me sigh and – if I may be honest – envy Keara.

Irish Sex Fairy is everything its title suggests and more. It’s warm, sexy, and fun…I absolutely loved Irish Sex Fairy and will definitely be reading more of Ms. Jamieson’s work!" [Link]

Shapeshifter Seductions » The First Anniversary of BLACK CAT BEAUTY

Tuesday 26 January 10:33:00 UTC 2010

Yep! Maowsa… it was one year ago, today, that my Halloween shapeshifter novella, BLACK CAT BEAUTY, was released. Nope, it didn’t make the deadline for the Halloween-themed stories Liquid Silver Books had put out a call for. Nevertheless, my black cat girl, Sable, is on the prowl and purring her story with lots of cattitude.

Sometimes, it feels as though I can barely get a breath in. Time flies way too fast these days. Nearly as flash-speedy as my hero and Sable’s erotic lover, Devon, takes to the skies… faster than a speeding bullet. Devon not only stars as Super Ace in the movies, he is a superhero in disguise.

One reason I wrote Sable’s tale/tail was for the sheer fun of it. Yep, utterly selfish on my part. Still, I hoped readers would enjoy the fun, too. Okay-yowls, the infamous reviewer, Mrs. Giggles, was not amused, well, actually, she admitted to laughing and not knowing why… however, she couldn’t handle what she called the ā€˜cheesy’ element of the story.

Sable would slinky shrug, and basically say to the Giggler, to each her own fur coat… and it’s her loss, the silly human… raoorrrr! let the Mae West-seductive party begin… did you bring me an enormous sausage treat, superhero? Or, are you just glad to see me?

I realized I never posted this review from a fellow author on this blog. So, happy snappy roars, here it is ~

Taste of Kiwi » Pros and Cons of Writing for Different Publishers (part one)

Tuesday 26 January 9:00:47 UTC 2010

I’m a member of the Marketing for Romance Writers loop. There’s a wealth of knowledge available in this group, mainly promo and marketing advice but there are also discussions about other writing related things such as publishers. Late last year the subject of writing for different publishers was raised. Author Brenna Lyons had such awesome advice about the pros and cons that I asked if she’d write a post for me on the subject. Over to Brenna…

Pros and Cons of Writing for Different Publishers (part one) by Brenna Lyons

Why do it?

You’re a prolific author- It is possible to overload the system of a single publisher, if you submit everything you write to that one. Can you imagine the havoc that could cause with a prolific author?

You write in several genres- It’s a solid fact that authors who write in many genres may not be able to place all of their books with a single house. If you sign with a publisher for your fantasy erotic romance books and then you write a straight fantasy book, that publisher is likely not your market.

To work with publishers/authors/editors you enjoy- This is not my favorite reason to change or add publishers, but some people do choose publishers this way. For me, it is more important that I think the people I will be working with know what they are doing, are pleasant (or at least tolerable) to work with, and have a smooth-running …

RomErotica Writers » If you write it…they will undoubtedly ask if it was reality inspired

Tuesday 26 January 5:10:00 UTC 2010

Well, not everyone, but I find it does happen a great deal. And I’ve spoken to enough of my peers to know it’s not an isolated instance with me. Romance writers get to field all sorts of interesting questions about our highly adventurous and erotic lifestyles. I mean, really. It’s a wonder I can even walk straight with all the perceived ā€˜research’ I’ve had to do over the course of my publishing lifetime. I joke about this with my female friends ALL the time. They get it. Or so I thought.

During a recent ā€˜no penises allowed’ party, my friends and I were discussing the highpoints of my upcoming release from Total E-Bound, a hot little contemporary that revolves around two confectionary experts titled NOT QUITE VANILLA. The hero and heroine rise to the challenge they receive from a local sex therapist to create a chocolate addition for a relationship kit named ā€œBound and Beggingā€. Yes, chocolate and bondage…a moment of reverent silence, please.

To continue, I told the ladies exactly what my buff-beyond-belief hero came up with for an idea—and how much fun my heroine had being his guinea pig when it came to product testing. ( Yeah. If my Fairy Lust-mother ever grants me a life-imitates-fiction moment…it’d be that one.)

For the first time ever in my ā€œtell us about your bookā€ roundtable discussions, a silence blanketed the room. And, in the immortal words of Astro from ā€˜The Jetsons’, I thought to myself: ā€œRot-ro, Rorgeā€.

The Rantings & Ravings of Jeanne St. James » Surrender Love by Kayelle Allen
