Samhain Weblog » BRANDED AS TROUBLE – available in print!!

Sunday 24 January 4:49:35 UTC 2010

The sixth book in my Rough Riders series, BRANDED AS TROUBLE is now available in print!

Here’s a teaser:

BRANDED AS TROUBLE
…It’s hard to trust the future when you’ve been branded by the past

As a walking advertisement for the tattoo shop she’s set up in a small Wyoming town, India Ellison is well acquainted with preconceived notions. Despite the odd looks and off-color comments about her off-color hair, life is good. She’s clean and sober, dotes on her sister’s kids and, best of all, spends most of her free time with her best buddy, cowboy Colt McKay.

Reformed bad boy Colt never expected three years of sobriety to lead to three years of abstinence. Curbing his craving for booze and random sexual encounters is nothing compared to the ever-increasing craving for his hot-tempered, hot-bodied best friend, India. Too bad she’s his A.A. sponsor. Too bad she hasn’t a clue that Colt’s been head-over-bootheels in love with her from day one.

After an unexpected, steamy interlude, all India can think about is riding the sexy cowboy instead of her motorcycle, even when Colt is determined to show her a slower ride is worth the wait.

Or are they risking their friendship for a fling that could burn them both?

Warning: this romp features nekkidness the cowboy way—sex with boots on and with boots off, dirty sex against a dirty pickup truck, bare-assed sex on a bear skin rug, graphic language, unfortunate aim with a nail …

Redneck Romance Writer » Robert Cray ROCKS!!! And So does The Redneck.

Saturday 23 January 22:58:32 UTC 2010

The Redneck, for our ten anniversary which will be on January 28th, bought tickets to see Robert Cray at the Arkley Center in Eureka. Yep. I was the loud one.
I had to work at the office this week, so on Friday, the Redneck planned to meet me in Eureka. On his way home, he surprised me. He stopped at the Blue Lake Casino.

He got us a room at their hotel there. With a King size bed. SWEEEEEET!
So, we had dinner at the Woodley Island Marina.

The Redneck had Petrole Sole and I had scallops. Great view and awesome food.
Then we went to see Robert Cray.

He was AWESOME!!! Let me say that again. AWESOME!!!!! “Chicken In The Kitchen” was probably the most fun. The Cray band was ON FIRE last night. He did his signature “Phone Booth”, “Smoking Gun” and “Strong Persuader”, mixing it in with his new stuff like “Love 2009″ and “Trouble and Pain”. Jim Pugh was brilliant, as always, taking the keyboards to new and glorious heights. The Redneck and I love Jim as both a performer and a song writer since many of the songs we love are written by Cray or by Jim. Richard Cousins, the bassist, is new to me, though not to the Cray band since he was with Cray when they recorded some of his earlier work. Cousins was energetic and seemed to bring a more outward performance for entertainment. I loved it.
Cray was …

Last night, I’d just finished eating some noodles with my neighbor when the devil–I mean Maxine–calls and tells me she’s gonna be over in five minutes. Based on previous experience, I already know there’s no point in arguing with the devil, so she comes over and gets me. We managed to get my neighbor out of her pajamas and drag her with us. As I may have mentioned, Carson City has an amazing selection when it comes to nightlife, so after much deliberation we decided to go to some place I’d never been to, but there was a live band so we decided to give it a go. Here’s some texting I did while at the bar:

I’m listening to a Journey cover band.
Oh shit.
I’m gonna make this a party.
Damn straight.

Here, hee

I wish I had jesse’s girl
Try Harder.
I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is prolly moot! Moot! OMG, Ha ha! (At this point I’m incredibly impressed with my cleverness on account of the fact that my friend’s last name is Moots.)
Moot!!
OMG. Ha Ha.

Ha!
I’m going out with the shop dudes tonight.
Strip club? If so I’m jealous.
Be jealous.
Have fun bitch.
Oh. I plan to sugar.
I hate you.
Riiiight.

No, I did hate him. I wanted to go to the strip club, but alas I was stuck in CC.

Maxine, who is sitting across the table, texts me:

Omg…there is …

I came home to (or with, since most were via e-mail) a slew of story rejections—I guess editors were cleaning out their In Boxes. Several of them were so close, which is good (close is better than not at all) and bad (ack! not close enough!). In two cases, I’ve been invited to resubmit the same story later: one because it’s a holiday-themed story and they’d rather not sit on it until August when [Link]

Jina Bacarr presents Cleopatra's Perfume: The Prequel » A Naughty Victorian Lady entices you to read a naughty romance

Saturday 23 January 17:00:00 UTC 2010

by Lady Carlton nĂ©e Katie O’Roarke, heroine of “The Blonde Samurai”

It has come to my attention on this rainy day when the emerging buds from the flower blossoms sigh with delight at the welcome shower that you, dear lady reader, are not reading enough romances.

How do I know this?

I have it on good authority from the “corset rĂ©gime” that upper class ladies who are not having satisfying sexual relations with their husbands are resorting to drastic measures to change their circumstance.

What has so disturbed this stalwart group of Society ladies who shake their ample bosoms and rattle their tiny parasols whenever a new thought infringes upon their ordered world is the idea that reading romances can improve your physical relationship with his lordship.

You are wary of such an idea, you say.

Here is a first-hand account to prove my point. When I ventured out earlier this morning to a fancy goods shop to purchase new leather kid gloves (a weakness of mine), I overheard a conversation between two aristocratic ladies that went something like this:

Lady M: “His lordship hasn’t dined at home all week. I cannot tell you the loneliness that overcomes me when I stare at his empty place at the table, not to mention the embarrassment when I hear the servants whispering about it.”

Lady R: “Does he go to his club or perhaps that disgraceful establishment near the Burlington Arcade? You know, the one where …

Shapeshifter Seductions » How Overwhelmed Are We?

Saturday 23 January 15:56:51 UTC 2010

I haven't seen the movie "Avatar" yet. The weather's been lousy and honestly, hubby and I prefer matinees and our schedules haven't been lining up. I have noticed how much everyone else has liked it though and it seems like some people are having a hard time these days because they don't live on the planet where "Avatar" takes place (I apologize for not being able to recall the name). Excuse me?

There seem to be some people who are getting depressed because of this. Depression is horrible and I'm not trying to make light of the situation. I'm trying to understand. The only explanation I can think of is that people feel helpless to change the world they live in now. And come to think of it, how many times have you heard someone utter "Why bother? What can we do?" As if "we" are comprised of people without any power.

I have to admit that it's not hard to feel powerless when you see the pictures of the devastation that's befallen Haiti, the current political unrest everywhere, reports about the employment situation, health care; the list goes on. And if I watched it on a continuous 15 minute loop, all day long I might get to the point where I'd like to pack my bags and go live on another planet.

Does anyone remember when you had a half hour of local news and an hour of national news every night? When they actually reported the news and you didn't have … [Link]

Samhain Weblog » A New Decade Gives One Pause

Saturday 23 January 15:01:46 UTC 2010

The start of a new decade gives one pause, doesn’t it?

When I look back over the years, the decade seems to be the defining container for major changes in my life: finding an identity away from the family, seeking social contacts, seeking adventure, starting my own family, launching a second career.

Because of these major shifts in life focus, each decade has its own landscape and identity. You can look back at the decades and know how they made you the person you are today.

But what about this new decade? How will this new decade define you – or you define it?

The last decade made me a published author of two medieval romantic suspense novels, MATILDA’S SONG and OUT OF THE DARK. This was the first time in my life I worked without getting a monthly paycheck. Always when I expended effort on a job, I’d know I would receive the reward in a weekly or bi-weekly or monthly paycheck. Not so with writing. It’s an aspect of being an author that’s not much talked about in classes.

We learn a lot about plots and dialog and pacing, but who ever gives a class on how to live for a decade without a salary if you want to do the thing you love?

Along with building a novel, I had to build a viable business structure. That included a credible business plan on how I would target audiences and promote my books. I had to find a bookkeeper …

RomErotica Writers » Traveller's Tales

Saturday 23 January 10:33:00 UTC 2010

Yesterday, M King's tale The Gypsy's Fiddle came out at http://www.loveyoudivine.com/ It's the last installment in a series. Each story is a standalone (I do love that) and they are conencted by theme rather than plot or characters. Each tale follows the exploits of a gypsy lad. Laced with folklore and paranormal elements, the stories are wild and wonderful, exploring how far people will go for love. The romances are truly magical. It's an entirely m/m series, beautifully written. I've loved every one of them, which is why I thought I'd talk them up today.Being a fiddle player myself, I have a particular fondness for stories about players of violins. There is an old tradition of fiddles being the devil's music, and fiddlers making pacts with Satan (these days the myth has shifted to blues players). The violinst and composer Paganini was accused of just that, because of his music, and his effect on women!Historically, Christian based thinking has often expressed the rather hideous idea that being actively gay means putting your immortal soul in jeopardy. Across this series, M King's young men find themselves in terrible danger, some indeed with their souls on the line. I love the way she has subverted tradition here, because it is gay love that saves the lads from evil, rescuing them from curses, demons, and other figures who wish them ill. The stories are beautifully written, and can be found via the publisher – http://www.loveyoudivine.com/, on amazon kindle, at ARE, fictionwise and others.

Taste of Kiwi » Mistaken Identity

Saturday 23 January 7:01:27 UTC 2010

This week’s theme is mistaken identity, and I’ve chosen an excerpt from my romantic suspense Playing to Win.

Playing to Win by Shelley Munro

“Damn, that feels soooo good.”

Kate Alexander grinned and worked steadily, competent hands gliding over her client’s powerful body, massaging knots from tight muscles until each breath the man took was deep and even and relaxed.

Forest birdsong and the bubble of flowing water poured through concealed speakers in the corner of the dimly lit room. A tea candle flickered under a bowl of scented water, steam rising to release floral notes of lavender and exotic sandalwood.

Without warning, the strident demand of a doorbell shattered the calm oasis. Pried from her deep concentration, Kate dug her fingernails into the muscle of her client’s right calf.

He jerked awake with a grunt, wincing. “Ow! Whaz’s wrong?”

“Sorry, Adam.” Kate made a soothing sound and continued with feather-soft stroking until he relaxed again, but her attention had fractured and she glared in the direction of her front door. The sign in the middle of her door was clear enough for even a child to understand. Aromatherapist at work. Do not interrupt.

The bell rang again with three staccato bursts. A brief interval later, deafening thumps echoed through her inner sanctum. Kate cursed under her breath and eased the massage to an end. She wiped her hands on a towel to remove the last traces of oil and shrugged off her pale green protective coverall. “I’m sorry. …

Fierce Romance » Let the Blog Tour Begin–Legend of the White Wolf

Saturday 23 January 6:30:00 UTC 2010

Let the blog tour begin! Here I'm at The Love Struck Novice, where Sarah Simas asked me a lot of thought-pondering questions! I loved it!

http://thelovestrucknovice.blogspot.com/2010/01/terry-spear-walking-on-wild-side.html

My maiden name is Wilde, so I really was walking on the wild…wilde side. In German, which is where the name originated for our family, it did mean wild. I wonder if my German ancestors were wild. Hmmm… I can see them fighting the Romans at the time of their downfall and…well, that's another story.

I’m also excited about being the SciFi Guy's guest again, this time for Feb 12. I'll have to post an updated schedule this weekend.

From a blog that was linked to werewolves, and linked to Legend of the White Wolf, which is why it came to my attention, I thought this quote was neat and wanted to share:

“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” ~~The Wolf Man

I wanted to say that wolfbane is not what you thought it might be. I don't use it in my stories for one reason. No one knows it's real effect on werewolves. In some literature, wolfbane will keep the werewolf from shifting. In some, it will kill the werewolf. In others, like this one, it will cause the werewolf to come out. Sooo, with all these different versions, I have to say that all but one is a myth.

Now which one is the right … [Link]

Fierce Romance » Don't you hate it when characters leave out pertinent information?

Saturday 23 January 5:42:00 UTC 2010

I’m writing a romantic comedy. While it is a comedy, one character has a secret. I’ve written this story believing his secret was nothing too heavy, just an ahhhh poor guy sort of thing. Why? Because that’s what he told me.

I’m in the process of second round edits, which for me is where the complicated writing begins. First draft is bare bones, then I go back in with a naïve belief that I know exactly what my characters need to do to get from point A to point B. Yeah. Wrong.

As I got deeper into second edits, I realized my character was much angrier this go round. At first, I went with it. I mean residual stuff does follow you, so okay, whatever. If this is what he needed right now then so be it. Then it got a bit darker. I started to bite my lip and stare at the screen in confusion. What in the world was he doing? Well, this week his behavior had me scowling. There was no way he was that screwed up over what he’d told me. It was not possible. Let me put this into perspective for you: Mountain meet mole hill. Yeah, that bad.

So we had a chat last night. It went something like this:

Me: Dude, what the hell?

Character (we’ll call him Luke) stared me down, jaw rigid. “I told you everything that happened.”

I banged my fist on my desk. “If that’s the case, you need major counseling. Because,” I waved my … [Link]

Beyond the Veil » Divination: Celtic Ogham – Saille

Saturday 23 January 5:31:00 UTC 2010

Pronunciation: sahl-yeh
Tree: White Willow (Salix alba)
Letter: S
Deity: Brighid, Cailleach, Morrigan
Month: February, Imbolc, aka "Witch's Moon" or "Moon of Balance"
Color: Yellow (some sources say any bright color)
Animal: Hare, cat, hawk
Planet: Moon
Flower: Primose
Gemstone: Moonstone

The white willow's young branches are feathery, flexible and droopy (though not as droopy as the weeping willow). It grows in wet soil near rivers and streams and has long history in healing and religious ritual. Orpheus was said to have received his gift for poetry by touching the willows Persephone's sacred grove. Since then, many artisans have followed his example to gain eloquence, inspiration and skills.

The Christian celebration of Easter sprang from the ancient of Druid creation mystery that says the universe was hatched from two eggs hidden within the willow's multiple trunks. In spring rituals, colored eggs were placed within a willow to commemorate this event, then eaten at Beltane.

The Celtic word for Saille means sudden outburst of emotion, action or emotion. In Native American culture, the willow's gentle branches were said to sweep away fear. The branches are said to be ideal for Wiccan besoms, divining water, and finding lost objects.

Water always seeks a stable level. In divination, when Saille appears it could be telling you to pay attention to the imbalances in your life, be they physical, spiritual or interpersonal. You could be entering into a time of bursting psychic growth, intuition, imagination – or maybe self deception! A time of enchantment is at hand; new winds are blowing and you need to be prepared … [Link]
