Lilli Feisty :: Blog » Brain-dead.

I’m working on two projects. The one I thought would be “easy” just keeps getting more complex. Why did I think writing a post-apocalyptic prostitute on a pirate ship would be easy? She has to have all these issues… damn her. And I have to work them out for her. It’s not easy being God.

And even more mind numbing? I’m working on another project and they are both. So. Different. Switching worlds, time-periods, characters. I barely know anyone in real life who will talk to me anymore.

I just want to put on some Buffy and not think.

The End.

Samhain Weblog » Are you ready to TURN IT ON?

Tuesday 19 January 4:09:30 UTC 2010

Pushing the sensual limits can set off all kinds of alarms

Inheriting her grandmother’s home is a dream come true for web designer Maxine Turner. She’s looking forward to a little freedom from the constant demands of her beloved, crazy mob of a family. When vandals expose just how vulnerable she is living alone, she seeks help.

Ryan Claymore’s well-thought-out life was wrenched out from under him when responsibility for his special-needs step-brother landed on his shoulders. Going from military man to business man hasn’t been easy. He counts himself lucky he’s found Maxine to trade his security-system knowledge for her web site expertise.

The red-hot chemistry that sizzles between them comes from out of the blue, and they both fight a losing battle to resist. Even the secret Ryan hides isn’t enough to keep Maxine from working her way into his heart—and his bed.

But something else might tear them apart. Whoever seems determined to destroy her home, and her sanity along with it.

Warning: Realistic multiple orgasm sex scenes, men getting in touch with their emotions, brothers being—well—brothers, and a very tempting back porch swing
you have been warned.
—————~
TURN IT ON is a departure from Vivian Arend’s usual paranormal stories here at Samhain, but she hopes you’ll find it enjoyable even without shifters. Watch that warning label- the red hot part? They mean it. You can find out about the other things Viv’s got planned at her website.

Beyond the Veil » Warts and All….

Tuesday 19 January 2:25:00 UTC 2010

I’ve been reading a great deal of urban fantasy and paranormal romance lately. There have been a few new pieces, but primarily I’m revisiting old friends of favorite series and remembering what made me excited about the genres back in the beginning. Reading all the of the books so close together, I’ve noticed the “Beautiful Swan/Ugly Duckling” phenomena in all it’s glory. Specifically its been the beautiful swan that due to upbringing and general womanly insecurity still sees herself as the ugly duckling.

Being inundated by the repetition of it has led to a lot of discussions lately. As writers and readers, do you find this particular “humble heroine” more relatable than a confident heroine? Is it important to know the heroine is humble and doesn’t realize how truly beautiful she is despite the two, three or ten men falling at her feet? Should the reminder of her humility be addressed once or twice, or sprinkled liberally throughout the book and series?

I think if you had asked me ten years ago I would have come down firmly on the side of humble. Chick Lit and Erotica were beginning to pimp the sexually empowered woman, which was wonderful, but not always done well. Many times a heroine came off as sexually predatory, shallow, or just mean. After another decade under my belt convincing the women around me that yes, he meant what he said, and no I’m not just saying they’re attractive because we’re friends—ooooh confidence!

Not only do I want the real … [Link]

EREC: erotic romance » Romance in the Fruit and Veg Aisle

Monday 18 January 23:19:00 UTC 2010

I don't think it is just my book cover obsessed mind, I think something is going in the world of packaging. I mean, look at Mr. Landgarten here with his guyliner, emo haircut, unbuttoned shirt, and suggestive (and rather impractical) method for holding his huge pumpkin. This is not a pumpkin farmer, its a manga character moonlighting as a model pretending to be a farmer.

And who is he looking at so suggestively? Maybe it has something to do with how the Sun-Maid raisin girl seems to have suddenly vaulted over puberty into age-of-consent territory. Not that she looks like a grape picker, more like a poser girl with some freckles air-brushed on. [Link]

Fierce Romance » A Present, Past Due

Monday 18 January 22:22:42 UTC 2010

I found that writing a post for today was a tad more difficult than I thought it would be. I mean, I obviously have a ready-made, fantastic subject I admire greatly–Martin Luther King, Jr. However, as I tried to write something appropriate to highlight and honor his vast achievements and contributions to civil rights and American politics and society, I fell flat. Flat with a THUD. Everything I tapped in, when I re-read it, seemed to reek of understatement or triteness. At one point I swear it sounded like a 2nd grade book report; at another, a bit of a sermon. So, how do you write something honoring someone who ultimately lost his life in the battle for equality and peace? The answer is…

You don't.

There’s nothing I could say that hasn't been said before, and I am certainly no Abraham Lincoln, whose incredible eulogy known as the Gettysburg Address articulated his great admiration for those who died at Gettysburg while at the same time reminded the living to never forget the cause for which those brave souls gave their lives. That one piece of writing still gives me chills when I read it, and it also gave me the key to finishing this post. Therefore, I will not eulogize Martin Luther King, Jr. today; instead, I will "take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion."

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great communicator, and so today I'm posting about communication. Communication is the … [Link]

Redneck Romance Writer » An OMG It’s POURING Just Sayin’

Monday 18 January 21:08:59 UTC 2010

To The Weather
We’ve had a drought. We’ve been dry. But JEEZ!!! You certainly are making up for it. What with the weather forecast being pretty ugly and our latest earthquake, I’m wondering what you have in store for us this winter season!
Just Sayin’
To Hugo Chavez
I find it rather amusing that you believe the U.S. is using a natural disaster to occupy Haiti. Seriously? First of all, the history of our relations with Haiti have not been very positive and I can’t see that it’s going to get any better. The Haitian political structure has always been a house of cards and the United States has never been able to predict it. I will say I find your bid for political power during so much death and destruction only confirms what I already believed about you. You will achieve international attention at whatever the cost. The Haitian devastation should not be used as a political chess piece for the maneuvering of world leaders. It should be a call to the human side of all of us. After all, Mr. Chavez, whether any of us like it or not, we all share the same genetic make up.
Just Sayin’
To the Relief Workers in Haiti
You are heroes. Whether it’s appreciated or not, you are.
Just sayin’
To the United Nations
Like the United States government, you have shown yourself incapable of responding to a major natural disaster. It concerns me that an international force responds better …

Lilli Feisty :: Blog » Romance Junkies Review!

Monday 18 January 20:57:00 UTC 2010

I just found this Review over at Romance Junkies. I’ll post part of it here because it made me do a happy dance:

BOUND TO PLEASE is intoxicatingly wonderful. A lover of D/s romance, BOUND TO PLEASE has just the right amount of dominance and submission, passion and pleasure. Ruby’s character is strong, steady, and secretly naughty. Her fantasies are scorching hot and she never thinks that they would ever come true. Mark St. Crow made me shiver. Sexy with a capital “S”, he is the epitome of bad-boy and angel all rolled into one. The love scenes between Mark and Ruby simply shattered all ideas I had about D/s and then some.

Happy sigh. :)

Leah Braemel » Monday Check-In

Monday 18 January 20:13:00 UTC 2010

I almost titled this Monday Morning Check-In, then realized it's Monday afternoon. As you've noticed I've not been posting as much as I usually do. That's because I've decided this year I have to focus on writing more novels/novellas than I do blog posts.

I finished the western, and sent it out to my critique partners. Oh, I love them so much for pointing out all the stupid things I've missed. Brett's eyes changing color from blue to grey and back again not the least of it. I'm really happy with the final product and hope I'll have some good news for you within the next few weeks, although it'll probably be closer to months before I know.

I’m back working on Chad's story and I've jumped from the "this is crap" stage to "this has potential" stage. It always helps my productivity when I feel hopeful rather than despondent about my writing.

On the home front — Guitar Hero finished his electrician's course back in December, and today he started a brand new job that luckily for both of us is reachable by bus. His employer has ten weeks to decide whether to keep him on or accept him as an apprentice, so we've got fingers crossed on that front as well.

Gizmo Guy and I attended Curly's Indenture Ceremony ten days ago — he's going to study how to be a plumber as part of the final semester of his co-op program. Which means he has to find someone to take … [Link]

Shapeshifter Seductions » How much shapeshifting is too much
or not enough?

Monday 18 January 20:10:00 UTC 2010

My paranormals have featured shapeshifting wolves but my characters don’t run around as their alter egos very often. So sometimes I wonder if they spend enough time in their wolfy forms. How do you know how much is not enough or too much? I think this varies from book to book and author to author.

I try to have my characters change at least once, but is once enough? My characters are humans first and animals second. Their animal nature permeates their human selves but it isn’t all that they are about. They change if they feel inclined or being an animal is more convenient than being human. They also choose their animal form if it’s more suited to a particular situation.

It’s not that you never see any animal aspects of my shifter characters. I created my shifters so that when they mate during a female’s heat cycle, their fang’s elongate and other human parts of their anatomy change somewhat too. I let you guess what might change. :evil grin:

Their animal background figures into their speech patterns as well. For example wolf shifter children are referred to as pups and female shifters may be referred to as a bitch. For my shifters, the term is descriptive not derogatory. Their families are called packs and wolves within those packs are alpha, beta or omega, depending on their temperament.

Fellow writers
do you have your shifters make the change to their alter egos often or occasionally? How do you decide what’s enough? Readers, how much … [Link]

The Otherworld Diner » What Readers Want

Monday 18 January 16:38:00 UTC 2010

I’m running the published author contest for my home chapter this year. For the contest, the books are judged by avid romance readers (no writers or industry professionals allowed) and we ask the prospective judges to rank their top five genre preferences. As the applications come in, I’m finding it interesting to see what the readers out there really want. Here’s a current ranking of their first choices:

Paranormal – 30
Historical – 29
Romantic Suspense – 23
Romantic Comedy – 12
Long Contemporary – 9
Long Inspirational – 8
Erotica – 8
Short Contemporary – 4
Best First Book – 4
Short Inspirational – 3
Single Title – 3
Southern Theme – 2

The applications are still coming in, so the data could change. But running this contest has given me an interesting feel for the current marketplace. As a paranormal writer, I’m thrilled to see Paranormal at the top of the list. My paranormals also tend to be historical (I have a thing for time travels) so seeing Historical in 2nd place bodes well for me too. And since I write with a good deal of humor, Romantic Comedy in 4th place is a good sign too. Looks like I’m aiming for the right market. Now, if I could just figure out how to cram some suspense in there, I could have a quadfecta (is there even such a word?). [Link]

Samhain Weblog » Okay, so ask me…

Monday 18 January 15:40:49 UTC 2010

I realized, when looking back at all the past ‘Ask the Editor’ posts we’ve done, that we’ve never actually had an open ask the editor thread. So, instead of listening to me ramble on about the topic du jour, I thought I’d open today’s post to you.

Is there a burning question you have for the new Executive Editor? Something you’ve been dying to know about Samhain Publishing? Ask it in the comments. I’ll be popping in all day to answer.

I’ll start with a question I’ve heard too many times:
Q. Is it true that only current Samhain authors can submit shorter works – like 12 – 20K-word short stories?

A. Nope. not at all. We will look at any length between 12,000 words and 120,000 from any author – published with Samhain or aspiring to be published with Samhain.

Now it’s your turn… what’s your question?

Donna Grant » Week in Review

Monday 18 January 15:22:30 UTC 2010

Copy edits for Forbidden Highlander are done and off to my editor. I’ll only get to see the book one more time in galley proofs before it goes off to the printer.

Next up is revisions for book 4 for the Dark Sword series. In answer to the many emails, yes, book 4 is Hayden’s book. I really enjoyed getting to know Hayden and his heroine more. I’m anxious to dive back into their world to start my revisions. Hayden struck a chord with some readers who met him in Dangerous Highlander, so I hope I do him justice.

I’ve told a few readers, but I’m curious to see who others think will be the hero in book 5. Tell me who you think book 5 should be about.

Dana's Magic and Mayhem » Blog Posts

Monday 18 January 14:20:00 UTC 2010

I have a couple of blog posts going up today and tomorrow and thought I'd mention them. The first to go up should be the one at The Samhellion Blog. As soon as it goes live I'll add an edit to this post. In it I talk about head colds and why I don't write when I have one.

The second post will be at the RWA’s Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal Blog. I was asked to do a guest spot, and of course I chose how to write humor as my topic. The FF&P blog is more "industry" related, so if you're not interested in the craft of writing you might want to skip it. (Then again, it gives you an idea into the workings of my mind… yeah, you might want to skip it. I'm told my brain is a scary place to be.)

P.S.: It appears I lost my head cold (YAY). But that's okay. My ten year old found it.

EDIT: Post is up! [Link]

RomErotica Writers » Welcome to 2010!

Monday 18 January 13:35:12 UTC 2010

You know what's really funny? Until last year, I was saying the year we were in as follows: two-thousand-and-nine. But now, I find myself saying: twenty-ten. How strange is that? And it wasn't like I planned it. It just came naturally. lol.

Anyway, I hope you all had a great new year. We're well into the month of January already, aren't we?

The first thing I wanted to share today is my first review for WITHER. As I mentined last year, my space cowboy adventure is my very first book from Samhain Publishing, so it's very exciting. And reading this awesome review made my day. It's from Fern at Long and Short Reviews, and she gave me 4 Books.

Here’s some of what she said: “Sometimes, the cover of a book is enough to engage the interest. Such was the case when I first saw the cover for Wither. A dusty cowboy, planets in the background, six-shooter in hand
how could I not be tempted? But the real treat was waiting within the pages." You can read the whole review here. Thanks Fern!

This year has started out pretty well, so far. I've already signed another contract with Damnation Books, for a novella called DAMAGED. This is the story of a struggling writer who's got a demonic problem in the house, a husband that's distracted with that problem, and a plumber who is trying to help her. It's been scheduled for September, so that's super cool. I also got news that my horror ish … [Link]

Monday 18 January 12:54:52 UTC 2010

Congratulations to Juliana Stone’s Black Legacy for winning last week’s clash!

And now on to this week’s poll…

Sandra Sookoo says: “Initial reaction? Hair. Both the h/h have so much hair! Luxurious strands. Then my eye moved over the sword, the soothing background and finally landed on the hero’s abs. Lots of yumminess there This cover screams action and adventure.”

Barbara J. Hancock says: “Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And I’m talking about the overall cover not just the heroine… although she’s amazing…tough with just a hint of vulnerability in her eyes. I immediately want to know her story and I want to meet the hero who is strong enough to take her on!”

Susan Blexrud says: I love the cover of Scion for the rich colors, the romantic basilica in the background, and Peter Decicco’s manly chest just itching to be touched. Wowzer!”

Nine Naughty Novelists » New Year, New Challenges

Monday 18 January 12:37:00 UTC 2010

I used to think that writing was one of the hardest things to do. Then it got edged out of top spot when I became a mom. Finding ways to balance family life and writing time was suddenly more of a challenge then finding out what to do with a blank page. (We won’t talk about how it became even harder when my daughter came along. Denial is a nice cozy place, so it’s best to leave me there, k?)

But I’ve recently added a new challenge to the list. Kicking the sugar habit. Except it’s one challenge that’s kicking my ass.

Of course it’s only been a couple days, but man am I jonesing for a chocolate bar. Hell, I’d have a spoonful of peanut butter if I wasn’t afraid I’d cross the line and my husband would walk into the kitchen to find an empty jar of peanut butter and my licking the spoon clean.

Hmmm, does the mention of chocolate and peanut butter make anyone else think about Reece Peanut Butter Cups?

See I’m my own worst enemy. But I’m determined to persevere since I know that the first few days of staying away from sugar are always the worst. And I also know that if I stop eating foods that jack my blood sugar levels up then those levels won’t later crash and force me to see out more sugary goodness. Vicious cycle, right?

It would just be so much easier if vegetables tasted as good to … [Link]

Star-Crossed Romance » Guest – Cindy Spencer Pape

Monday 18 January 11:46:47 UTC 2010

Good morning everyone! Today's guest is Cindy Spencer Pape, the author of over thirty popular books and novellas in paranormal, historical, and contemporary romance. According to The Romance Studio, her plots are “full of twist and turns that keep the reader poised at the edge of their seat.” Joyfully Reviewed said, her “colorful characters and plot building surprises kept me spellbound,” and Romantic Times Magazine says her “characters are appealing, and passionate sex leads to a satisfying romance.”

Cindy firmly believes in happily-ever-after. Married for more than twenty years to her own, sometimes-kilted hero, she lives in southern Michigan with him and two teenage sons, along with an ever-changing menagerie of pets. Cindy has been, among other things, a banker, a teacher, and an elected politician, but mostly an environmental educator, though now she is lucky enough to write full-time. Her degrees in zoology and animal behavior almost help her comprehend the three male humans who share her household. For more about Cindy and her books, you can find her on her website, www.cindyspencerpape.com or her blog, www.cindyspencerpape.blogspot.com.

Cindy is offering a downloaded copy of one of her books to one lucky reader so read all the way to the Lynda Again section to see how you can be the winner.

Building Castles – Kelly Jamieson's Blog » WIPs and Chains

Monday 18 January 11:00:00 UTC 2010

Lately I've had a flood of story ideas in my brain. The dilemma of course is – which one do I work on first? I already mentioned that I have three works in progress. But when I get a new idea, I get intrigued by that idea and want to run with it.

Am I in danger of becoming one of those writers who starts things and never finishes them?

Now, it’s not like I’ve never completed a book. I have 12 contracted books (10 already out and 2 more coming out) and I have – count ‘em – 6 completed manuscripts sitting waiting (for what, I’m not sure, but there they are). So I can do it. I’ve done it before. But geez, it’s been a while
and I’m wondering if I need to exercise some serious self-discipline and just work on one project and FINISH IT.

The ideas will still be there to work on when I’m finished – right? But what if it’s not fun? I love writing – I love so much about it. Becoming my characters, getting in their heads, living in their world, solving plot problems, finding beautiful new words and new ways to put words together that say exactly what I want to say. If it’s not fun, I just think – shouldn’t it be? [Link]

Naughty and Spice Blog » My super hot new release!

Monday 18 January 8:11:21 UTC 2010

Is out tomorrow…der, wish I could say today

But here’s the deal. As you read this I may or may not be out of town, so I had to put up a post that wasn’t too interactive since I won’t be here…maybe.

So I figure I’ll share a bit about my new super duper, freaky hot, erotic romance called Four Play which releases tomorrow (Tuesday) from Samhain!

Duty required she choose one life mate. Her heart wants all three.

Mikayla knew this day was coming. News has come down from the planetary elders—now that she’s twenty-five, the law requires she pick her lifemate. She may be the planetary secretary, but when it comes to trying out potential mates, she’s inexperienced and nervous.

She only needs one man with whom she can trust her life. Luckily she knows three—all friends since childhood. Even if they’re not thrilled to be her potential lifemate, it’s the only way she can get through this process.

Mikayla couldn’t be more wrong about Cedric, Kyle, and Brett. They’re eager, yet resentful about the situation. Each one would kill to claim her, but they’re not too happy about having to risk their friendship to win her love. Yet, one by one, they set out to do just that.

Mikayla is stunned to learn all three men drive her mad with desire—and make her feel cherished. Loved. Choosing one seems impossible, until the one man she doesn’t want forces her hand

Naughty and Spice Blog » That’s Inappropriate

Monday 18 January 8:11:16 UTC 2010

So I never watch The Cleveland Show. I was a big fan of Family Guy once upon a time but that was back in the simpler days, when the horribly vulgar and extremely funny show would fly right over my little ones’ heads. They didn’t get the jokes and I didn’t want them to get the jokes.

But then they started to question stuff. And, oh heaven forbid, they started repeating stuff. So I had to ban Family Guy from our TV. I had to sit down and tell the kids that the show is “inappropriate”. *insert sad face here*

I didn’t even attempt The Cleveland Show because I thought it would be more of the same. Well, my kids wore me down. Sunday was a bad day in my household i.e. the kids were driving me batty and I wanted them to shut up for a half hour and leave me alone. Oh don’t I sound like mom of the year?

Anywho, thank goodness for my Directv east coast feed. We started watching The Cleveland Show and while it’s not clean, it’s also not as “inappropriate” as Family Guy. Until Cleveland Jr started singing how much in love he was (with his stepsister but that’s another story for another time).

The quality isn’t that good (someone recorded it off their TV and I thank them for it) but I have to share it because the song Balls Deep is hilarious. Oh my. Talk about inappropriate.

Taste of Kiwi » A White Box

Monday 18 January 7:02:08 UTC 2010

A book is a sum of things—characters, setting and description, dialogue, pace and plot. It’s the combination of all of these elements, done in the right way that makes a book exciting and sought after by readers.

It takes a lot of work to get a book to a standard that’s saleable. My first drafts are like white boxes. People inhabit the white box—my characters that is, but they’re quiet and in shock from the lack of scenery. It’s all white in there, after all.

During the first stages, my characters are a bit superficial and half the time they have no idea what they’re doing, what their purpose is in the box. It’s almost like the first run through of a play where the cast are strangers and feeling their way into their parts.

It’s during the second and third run through that I add the color and turn my white box into a real world, complete with real people. Adding setting and description is a skill I’ve fought to learn—it certainly doesn’t come naturally.

Not so long ago, it was normal to read very flowery descriptions in books. These days descriptions in fiction are briefer and spare at times.

Here’s a paragraph from Powder and Patch by Georgette Heyer.

Here’s the deal. As you read this I may or may not be out of town, so I had to put up a post that wasn’t too interactive since I won’t be here…maybe.

So I figure I’ll share a bit about my new super duper, freaky hot, erotic romance called Four Play which is now available!

Mikayla is stunned to learn all three men drive her mad with desire—and make her feel cherished. Loved. Choosing one seems impossible, until the one man she doesn’t want forces her hand
