Romance Divas » Rhonda Stapleton, Author of the Month

Saturday 16 January 1:13:18 UTC 2010

Rhonda Stapleton started writing a few years ago to appease the voices in her head. She has a Master’s degree in English and a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing. In the twelve minutes of free time she has each day, Rhonda enjoys reading, photography, writing poetry, singing in the shower (and in the car, at work, or basically anywhere that provides oxygen), drinking chai tea, and playing on the Internet (AKA, connecting to the “mother ship”). Rhonda lives in northeast Ohio with her two kids, her manpanion, and their lazy dog. Visit her website at: http://www.rhondastapleton.com for more information about her and her books.

1. Tell us about yourself?

Well, I’m an author, mother, teacher, editor, and amateur photographer. I also hate blue food, love chinese and sushi, and hope to visit Japan in the near future.

2. How long have you been writing, and how did you get your start?

I’ve been writing since 2004. Stupid Cupid is actually the third novel I wrote. My first novel was a chick lit, and my second a YA (this is the one that got my agent). I’d originally written Stupid Cupid as one book, but my agent sent it to my editor who thought it would make a good trilogy.

3. How long have you been a member of Romance Divas? What does this site mean to you?

I’ve been a die-hard member since 2005, and it’s …

Kate Pearce » I haven’t forgotten you…

Saturday 16 January 0:51:50 UTC 2010

And to prove it-here’s a photo of the trifle I made for Christmas. Unfortunately, when I went to find the bottle of brandy to add to it, the brandy was all gone. I ‘believe’ we used it up last Christmas, although I have my suspicions…

It is fiddly to make but well worth the effort. My kids demolished it in about 24 hours

Here’s another picture of me watching my daughter have her first ski lesson. She’d just fallen over…

And here’s the little darling herself

And just in case you are looking for something to read next month:
Try this…

Love Kate x

I’ll have a contest on my blog next week to win an early copy.

EREC: erotic romance » From Craigslist

Saturday 16 January 0:31:49 UTC 2010

“Nationally known internet publisher seeks INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS actress (we decide this, not you) for tv/internet commercial. Looks should be on par with Miss America contestants. This is NOT negotiable. Role is for female character who causes “love at first sight” reaction in male character.

Potential for exposure is huge, but depends on the ad’s ability to generate revenue for the underlying product. If ad is profitable, it will run globally, and in perpetuity (since it will pay to run). Current plan is for at least one television run, regardless of profitability (for actor credits). Internet version of commercial is likely to go “viral.”"

But what kind of virus?

Melissaschroeder.net » Winner

Friday 15 January 20:43:52 UTC 2010

Yes, so it took me almost two weeks to get back to you all! I will claim it was my old age that caused my forgetfulness, lol. First a comment about the dust around the site. It does look a little different. Jeannie from Will Design for Chocolate is getting my new background up. Of course, at the last minute, I said, wouldn’t red be nice. So of course, she is redoing some of the blue parts. But, you can see what a wonderful job she has done so far. I cannot wait to get my new bookmarks and business cards.

But onto our bday winner. Cynthia N, you have won your choice of book from me. email me MelissaATmelissaschroederDoTnet and I will send you a list of what i have available in print to send you.

Thanks for the wonderful bday wishes everyone. Two weeks into the year and our family has already had three. Mine, Demon Seed the First, and my dog. We have until March for the next one at least.

Fierce Romance » Struggles of Writing in Winter

Friday 15 January 15:07:00 UTC 2010

Over the last few months my house has become more and more claustrophobic. I believe winter is the main reason for that. I think I’ve said before that I hate winter. Strong word to use and one I don’t allow my children to say, but dang it, I do. I hate winter. The lowering temperatures slowly suck the life out of me. I just find the deeper I get into the cold months the harder it is for me focus and feel motivated.

This year winter has been worse than usual. I live in North Carolina. We may have a cold day here and there, but for the most part our winters are mild. Still unpleasant, (anything below 60 degrees is unpleasant), but mild. This year? Ha. We’ve had a freaking arctic freeze. The last time it was this cold here was in 1977. The year I was born. I know, you’re thinking cry me a river, but I really needed to get that out. So know that I’ve whined, here is my real dilemma.

The uber-coldness has shrunk my house making it feel like the walls are closing in more and more each day. It’s effecting my writing and my creative juices. So I’ve been thinking of ways to help me get through the last two and half months before Spring gets here.

I’ve tried writing at Panera a few times. Remember my blog last week where I said I was easily distracted? Yeah well, put me beside a table of … [Link]

Xandra Gregory » Accumulation

Friday 15 January 14:46:06 UTC 2010

It snowed last week. A wonderful, white blizzard of unique and precious snowflakes and a delicious kind of cold that only comes with snow. And I didn’t write, because I have small children who like snowballs. But I did think a lot about accumulation, especially as I was pushing it off the front porch.

There’s nothing a writer likes better than accumulating words. I just came down not too long ago from a period of 30 days where I had to produce 1667 words a day (or sweat catching up). And lemme tellya, days where I pulled ahead, or got my words in early, those were good days. Thing is, though, when you’ve been doing this for longer than a week, you’ll start to notice something. Everybody has writing goals and tasks that sound like the easiest thing in the world–”Write two pages” or “Write a thousand words.” And they inevitably finish with, “…and then I’ll have a novel!” If I just let the snow fall–it doesn’t take work, it just takes gravity.

Haha. I mock because I am jealous. Because no, in ten weeks, I will not have a novel (and chances are, most of the rest of you won’t, either). If I just let the snow fall…I still won’t have a snowman. Oh, yes, at the end of ten weeks, I’ll have enough words to fill the pages between the front and back covers of a novel, but it will be a long ways away from being a novel. …

Dana's Magic and Mayhem » Er?

Friday 15 January 14:04:00 UTC 2010

Captain Feathersword is the friendly pirate, also referred to as the 5th Wiggle. His Magic Buttons are a fan favorite, and often cause the Captain to sing opera, rock or other music types. The buttons can also cause the Captain to sound like various animals, or imitate various objects.

My children are weird.

There we sat in the car, waiting for the school bus to arrive because Mommy still has a fever and doesn't want to make it worse. While we waited they introduced me to a game they'd been playing on the bus for about a week. They call it Chicken Button.

Yes, you read that right. Chicken Button.

Essentially, one child pokes the other and yells "Chicken!" At this point, the pokee is supposed to cluck. Sounds cute, right? Almost like Captain Feathersword and his magic buttons, right? They hit the "Cow" button and the pokee moos. They hit "Kangaroo" and the pokee bounces. They hit "Cat" and the pokee meows.

They hit "Fried Chicken!" and the pokee squeals, puts his arms and legs in the air and plays dead while the poker starts saying "Nomnomnom".

Please tell me you're having the same reaction I did, and that I'm not insane. Do I laugh, do I cry, or do I tell them not to imitate food? [Link]

The Crayon Box » Friday Five (updated on Sat)

Friday 15 January 13:32:00 UTC 2010

1. Bronchitis sucks. It has kicked my butt. 5 signs you know bronchitis is kicking your butt?

a. You're falling asleep while typing at your keyboard.

b. Everyone says, "You sound horrible." And you know you probably look as horrible as you sound.

c. The cats won't lay with you because you're coughing too much. And they glare at you when you try and get them to snuggle when you start coughing.

d. You keep cough medicine in your car so you can chug it as needed.

e. The clerk hands you the cough drops you just purchased at the grocery store instead of bagging them with the rest of the groceries.

2. Needless to say the writer who was already behind in writing is now further behind. *sigh* I really need to get my butt in gear and place it in the chair.

3. Girl Scout Cookies rock! 3.50 a box. Support a Girl Scout and buy some cookies!

4. Read Artemis Fowl. I have to say, pretty good book. I'll probably read the 2nd one. My oldest wants me to read the first Septimus Heap book. I'm also getting The Lightning Thief after seeing the movie trailer for it. Hmmmm. LOL a lot of Young Adult choices there…

5. Haiti. I've been watching some of the coverage. My heart and thoughts go out to the people of Haiti. How devastating. I was watching about this 11 year old girl who was pinned under a building (which also contained the bodies of about 20 family members and neighbors). … [Link]

Six Sexy Sirens » Gym and Writing

Friday 15 January 13:00:00 UTC 2010

A couple of weeks ago, I started gym again. Why? Because I'm a glutton for punishment. LOL Really, I just want to be healthier this year. It helps that my personal trainer (for three sessions only) is kinda cute–not in terms of looks, but personality. That beats physical looks anyday.

Anyway, he really worked me hard that first day. Just imagine, I've not had exercise for about 3 years and now I'm starting again–it is hard. My legs were all a-trembly when the session ended. But I console myself with the fact that this means the exercises I'm doing were good for me and were helping me toward my goal.

So these days, when I joined writing workshops, I'd complain and grumble about the assignments the trainers/facilitators would assign. On top of my DJ, I still had to finish the assignments at night! Can't I just write my stories? There are already too many of them whirling around in my head!

But I do realize that no one is ever in a standstill. Just as we continuously go for trainings in the DJ, in writing, I also have to continue learning. Just when I thought I had already learned a particular technique, it may be that there are other aspects that I hadn't studied yet. And the beauty of writing is that the more you write, the more you apply what you've learned into your stories, the better your stories become. [Link]

Samhain Weblog » Distance Really Does Help!

Friday 15 January 13:00:00 UTC 2010

With the new year—and all those resolutions—I decided I needed to finally tackle a project I’ve been putting off for, well I’m ashamed to admit this, but for two years. I have a book I need to rewrite (cleaning, tightening, cutting out all the boring bits which I let creep in). And while I agreed in theory that this book needed all this work, I’ve been making excuses not to look at it for awhile now. Yes, having a baby is a good excuse, but Destructo is not the reason I was avoiding these edits.

The real problem was that the work would be hard and I was afraid I’d be unhappy with the changes. This is a story I LOVE. The heroine is wonderful and awkward. The hero is sexy and strong. Even the bad guys are interesting. And there’s a lot of science in the story—my kind of science. Here’s where I went astray. I got carried away with the biology, evolution, and genetics and tended to…run off at the fictional mouth when it came to those aspects of the book. All this rhapsodizing slowed the first half of the book way too much.

But I LIKED it! I didn’t want to change it. (Hear the child throwing a tantrum here?) I knew it would be a better book with the edits. But knowing that and being able to face the changes were two different things.

Finally, with my new year’s resolution to face my fears, I started thinking …

Kiss and Tell » Twitter is El Diablo (But I Love It Anyway)

Friday 15 January 12:39:00 UTC 2010

I’ll be the first to admit that I'm a techno hillbilly. It's a wonder I'm not still sending my messages by banjo. I never tried instant messaging. Never. I just never felt the need. The truth is, I barely use my cell phone. I've had one for years. When I turned in my old one the people at the store stared at it in amazement. I actually went there to get a new battery and they told me they didn't even make that phone anymore, or the batteries to go in it. I've had my current phone for about two years. I just learned how to text last summer. And I only just learned how to send pictures over the holidays. Seriously.

So when Mari kept talking about Twitter, and then everyone else seemed to be talking about it, I just laughed and said no way. Don't need it. And it seemed like just another time suck waiting to happen. The moral of the story is…I was right! I didn't need it! And now I do! Now I can't wait to get on there each day to see what my friends have to say! Arghhhhh.

Twitter is the devil. It offers instant gratification. I had no idea how much I'd love that. A thought pops in my head. I think, "Hey, I should tell [fill in the blank here] about that." I just hit my little tweetdeck widget, and blammo I spew said idea all over Twitter (in 140 words or less) … [Link]

Embrace the Shadows » Fangtastic Friday – Interview with Erica Ridley

Friday 15 January 12:14:12 UTC 2010

Please welcome author Erica Ridley, author of Regency-set historical romance with a touch of paranormal. Her debut Gothic historical Too Wicked To Kiss has been chosen as the August 2010 book of the month for the Julia Quinn / Eloisa James book club. If you’d like to read Too Wicked To Kiss before release day, join the 30 Wicked Kisses countdown at 2wicked2kiss.com and get a scene a day in your inbox, starting February 1st. Erica will be giving away signed advance copies of the book to random subscribers!

ETS – Please tell us a little about yourself.

ER: I’m recovering from both jet lag and reverse culture shock, since I just returned to Florida this week after spending most of the past year in Europe! I love to immerse myself in other worlds, whether by cashing in SkyMiles for a ticket to a new corner of the globe or by losing myself in a good book. I’ve always been fascinated by anything out of the ordinary. This drives my literary addiction to historical romance, gothic romance, and paranormal romance as much as my real-life fascination with travel. If I could spend the rest of my life traveling and writing, I’d be living a dream!

ETS – Too Wicked To Kiss releases March 2, 2010. What inspired this novel?

ER: Is it weird if the answer is “getting lost”? (You’ll find this is a theme with me…) I had written a previous version of 2W2K …

Beyond the Veil » LOVE AT FIRST SHOT, Fringe, and New Books!

Friday 15 January 11:52:00 UTC 2010

Have you ever had something that rattled in the back of your head and just wouldn't go away? A character, an idea, a little nagging voice?
Most of the writers out there will raise their hand with a roll of the eyes. Of course we have! Well, one of those little nagging stories finally came out of the closet this week.

My Paranormal Romance Novella, LOVE AT FIRST SHOT, released from The Wild Rose Press on Wednesday. This spicy little number spent years smoldering in the back of my mind before I finally sat down and wrote it. TJ Jackson is a doctor who works hard when no one's looking, approaches the world with the type of enthusiasm usually reserved for small children, and believes there's no time like the present to have a little fun.
Emma Feltman takes the world entirely too seriously. Of course, when you're a master mage in training, very few people take you seriously no matter how innately powerful you might be. Since her latest relationship broke up because her lover was a cheating dog, she's been on a sexual hiatus. Unfortunately for everyone around her, the higher her frustration mounts, the more unpredictable her magic becomes.

Now, we learned in elementary science class that opposites attract as long as they're in the immediate vicinity. Ordinarily, these two would probably never be close enough to let the magnetics do the work. So, what brings them together? A dead werewolf, of course.
Here’s the blurb:
What do a dead werewolf, a kidnapped … [Link]

Nine Naughty Novelists » Dexter — Love him or hate him?

Friday 15 January 11:30:00 UTC 2010

I recently got caught up on Dexter. Well… almost caught up. For those of you who don't know the TV show, its a dramedy about a serial killer who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood spatter analyst. The twist — the love/hate part — is that he's a killer with a strict code: he only kills killers. This is where my dilemma arises. Of course, that kind of behavior cannot be condoned in society, but at the same time, I applaud taking such people off the streets, even in a fictional world.

Many would argue our justice system is broken. I've got no idea how to fix it, but in California, where we spend $50,000 a year on prisoners and $5200 a year per student, even I can see that something is wrong. Is Dexter the solution? Not only no… but hell no.
So why the fascination? Because it plays on the idea of a spectrum between good and evil, an idea that's been infecting my plot bunnies for years. I'm intrigued by the concept of one person's immorality being another's salvation. Or of someone typecast as evil doing good in the world.

Have you seen Dexter? Do you love him or hate him — or both? And is it possible for someone so inherently evil to benefit society in a symbiotic manner?

Building Castles – Kelly Jamieson's Blog » Extreme Close Up Chapter 28

Friday 15 January 11:00:00 UTC 2010

“Jack! The booze must be making you violent.”
“Nah. I had that idea before we started drinking.”
She snorted with laughter. “Are you that mad at him for sleeping with your girlfriend?”
He paused. “No. Actually, I don’t even give a shit about that. I’m more pissed off that he won’t help Sarah.”
“Oh, Jack.” Her heart softened and she dragged in a shaky breath.
“I like your living room, Ally,” he said with an abrupt change of subject. “Did I tell you that?”
“Uh…no, I don’t think so.”
“As soon as I walked in the door, I felt at home here,” he said. “Which is weird considering this is where you and Carter lived together.” He frowned.
“Well, this is all my furniture and stuff,” she explained. “So I guess it feels more like my place than Carter’s.”
“Yeah. It does feel like your place. It’s very you.” He waved a hand. “And I like it. And I like you.”
She giggled. “I like you too, Jack.”
He looked at her, lifted a brow. “You wanna have sex again tonight?”
Ally couldn’t help but laugh. “Apparently I always want to have sex with you. The question is, do you? You’re the one who’s been holding back.”
“Yeah. I have been. But suddenly all the reasons for us to not get together don’t seem so important.” He growled and put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her against him for a hug. “Only problem ish…is…I might have had a bit too much to drink.”
Ally relaxed against him, loving his embrace. “S’okay,” …

Taste of Kiwi » Horses & The Monster That Shall Not Be Named

Friday 15 January 7:10:46 UTC 2010

I often come across good articles and posts relating to writing and the writing business when I’m surfing on the net. What? You thought I wrote all the time?

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy both keeping up with the writing market and learning new things. I thought I’d share the bounty and repost some of the links I’ve found.

Bootstrap Book Marketing Co-op has a post on one thing that can really derail a writing career, and that is professional jealousy. We all have times when we feel down or think someone else is getting a better deal than us and the green-eyed monster creeps in. Bootstrap has a post called The Writer’s Other Classic Curse and Four Ways to Deal With It.

Erastes writes some very thought provoking posts at Reviews by Jessewave. A recent post related to horses in historical novels. Neigh…I blame Hollywood talks about horses and mistakes writers making with them. Note Reviews by Jessewave reviews gay romances, but the post on horses relates to all historicals.

Naughty and Spice Blog » Dancing and Dating by Shawna Moore

Friday 15 January 6:47:49 UTC 2010

One, two cha-cha-cha. One partner going forward, the other going back. A flirty dance filled with desire. The push-pull of steps, emotions and magical exchanges of a couple sharing common interests and exploring their attraction. Capable of creating a chemical reaction far more powerful than any conjured in a laboratory. They’re eager to learn more about each other but worried about making missteps and mistakes. After all, broken hearts definitely hurt more and take longer to heal than toes that have been trod upon. In the beginning, the signals are sometimes coming fast and furious and are confusing to the point where neither knows whether the connection has the potential of lasting or will end up fleeting.

Unlike the romantic heroes we enjoy writing and reading about, great guys are often hesitant in making that first step in the dating dance. Yet I’ve heard from many that they prefer remaining the “hunter”. These guys like maintaining some distance while surveying the situation. Facing the “music” of a potential love match is daunting for them even though we’re ten years into the New Millennium.

As an author, I adore writing Cinderella stories. From a creative standpoint, I’ll compare her bare foot to a single woman’s bare left ring finger. Her love bond begins with a slipper while a modern woman’s begins with an engagement ring. But although Cinderella and her Prince Charming may have waltzed their way into each other’s lives and hearts, in today’s society life happens at warp speed and …

This stop on the Fill Your Reader Blog Tour, I thought I'd provide a friendly neighborhood Public Service Announcement. If you aren't aware of these Marky Mark Calvin Klein ads from the early '90s, then scroll down! Right away!

This ad campaign, for obvious reasons, has stuck in my brain for years. I think I'd call that a job well done. What do you think? I distinctly remember walking down the street, seeing one of these, full body sized on the side of a bus stop. Yummers. I nearly tripped.

Mark Wahlberg has gone on to be a wonderful actor that I enjoy watching, but no matter how far his career goes, I'll still remember him in his undies. (Oh, and that's Kate Moss with him). If you want to see these a little bigger sized, just right click and select "view image".

This concludes the friendly neighborhood PSA.
Please continue on with the blog tour.

Have you ever done something really stupid? Something you know you’re going to regret for years, that will come back to haunt you whenever you think you’ve finally kicked it firmly to the curb? And how many times have those mistakes been made as a result of fear, insecurity, anger?

Back when I was still in university, I drove out of town one Friday to visit my boyfriend at school. I’m pretty sure I skipped my afternoon classes to get there before dinner, which wasn’t a one-time occurrence. (Shhh. Don’t tell my mother.) Almost as soon as I arrived, we had a nasty blow up.
