Emma Petersen » Flashback Friday: I miss Buffy

Friday 15 January 4:00:42 UTC 2010

Morning Loverlies,

It’s Friday already! Time sure flies when you’re on vacation. Anywho, it’s Flashback Friday and I’m going to be discussing one of my absolutely greatest TV show loves! Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It is so hard to believe BTVS will have debuted 13 years ago in March. 13 years. I remember rushing home from where ever I was to catch it or programming my VCR so I could watch the episode over and over again. It was the first TV I’d ever watched about vampires and sadly the last. I haven’t been tempted to watch any of the new shows because they don’t seem like the could compare at all.

The first two, maybe three seasons were my absolutely favorite. I loved the Scooby Gang and I loved Angel. I remember crying during the season two finale when Buffy had no choice but to kill Angel to say the world. And I can remember the closing scene with Sarah McLachlan’s Angel playing. Le sigh. It was like the bestest show ever.

I have so many favorite episodes. I was seriously addicted to that show and the forbidden love affair between Buffy and Angel, so much so I hated when they both moved on. It just seemed wrong somehow and I wanted my happily ever after.

They belonged together and I wanted them to find a way for that to happen. But alas it never did. Buffy moved on. Got a new squeeze (or two), a new network, and the …

Ember Case » Are you still using IE? Yahoo groups virus linked back to IE exploit

Friday 15 January 3:02:37 UTC 2010

Short post, but – Are you still using IE?
The Wall Street Journal says :
“Security-software maker McAfee Inc. said Thursday that a flaw in Microsoft Corp.’s Internet browser was exploited in recent cyber-attacks on Google Inc. and others that have caused the search giant to consider pulling out of China. ”

There’s a bit more detail in the CNET story, where it says “The vulnerability affects Internet Explorer 6, IE 7, and IE 8 on Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP, Server 2003, Server 2008 R2, as well as IE 6 Service Pack 1 on Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Microsoft said in an advisory on Thursday afternoon.” But it comes down to – if you’re still using IE, it’s a good time to give another browser a try.

Mozilla Firefox. Chrome. Opera. Safari. If you aren’t surfing safe, you shouldn’t be surfing.

Thursday 14 January 18:49:00 UTC 2010

I'm head down in the Cave today working on edits and doing critiques, but I thought I'd share this optical illusion Gizmo Guy sent me today. Move back from your monitor a ways (the email he'd forwarded said both 15 inches and 15 feet — I only had to get away a couple feet for it to work)

Up close it's Albert Einstein's face, right? Tell me who it is when you step back …

Weird, huh?

Naughty and Spice Blog » Thirteen reasons I’m awesome.

Thursday 14 January 16:35:34 UTC 2010

Negative self-talk is something we all do. So in honor of Thursday Thirteen, I’m saying fuck that and listing thirteen things about myself that are amazing.

1) I know how to set a table. Seriously, this is an important and forgotten skill. Also, I have impeccable table manners when I choose to use them.

2) I’m smart. No, really. I am. I just hide it really good. (I’m also ironic. This goes on the list of awesome, but only in parentheses.)

3) I can cook. I can cook really well, and I can cook a wide variety of food.

4) I like sex. And lots of it. What? That has to be awesome on some level.

5) I can write sentences like “hornier than a bread-box” and get away with it.

6) I try hard to be a good, loyal and forgiving friend.

7) I am open-minded and people tend to tell me their secrets. Because…

8 ) I’m a good listener. Unless…

9) You’re a moron in a bar trying to pick up on me. Then I’m a raging bitch and I don’t care what the hell you’re talking about. Okay, that’s not really a good quality that should be on the list. But hey, I often make up my own rules so now it’s a valid number for the awesome list.

10) I have an uncanny sense of direction. It scares men.

11) I have somehow managed to help produce an amazing child.

12) I will get in a …

Kiss and Tell » DAMMIT!

Thursday 14 January 13:10:00 UTC 2010

Happy Thursday! I don't have much to say today. I have been in the writing chalet high up in the mountains (I don't go into a cave cause well…bears or bad wizards or high tide can ruin the mojo) for the past few days. I have written guest blogs to be posted at later dates and answered interview questions as well, some I just received this morning. I have been busy.

I am also having to take time out of my already jam packed from 5:45am to 10pm day to call the local school board and explain why my daughter has missed 3 days since August. In preparation for this phone call and in honor of the premier of 24 this coming Sunday night, I have decided to channel my inner Jack Bauer…because Dammit! It's a complete waste of my time. I know why she wasn't there. Her teachers know why she wasn't there. But still, I get a letter…

I also received this cool little countdown Sprout yesterday. I know I know…all of you make your own. Well, I didn't. Dammit!

I didn't put Sprout building on my goals list for 2010, but I think I might work it in along with some other things that I have talked to a few people about. It's been a vastly entertaining January so far. I am awaiting word on a couple of manuscripts I've turned in. I'm writing a lot. Doing some research for my shifter novella. Sugar … [Link]

Ella Drake, dark paranormal romance » 13 ways to read a book

Thursday 14 January 12:33:00 UTC 2010

I noticed how many books I have on my Fictionwise shelf this week. This follows quickly behind my effort to keep track of the books I read this year on Goodreads. It got me thinking about ebooks, ebook devices, and just where do I find myself reading print books. Here are 13 ways I've read books in the past.

Under covers. With a flashlight. On a plane. On a beach. At the dinner table (as a kid in a house where I was the only female). I first started reading ebooks on a regular basis after I had my second baby. It was a life saver to be able to nurse him while reading or sit with him when he went to sleep. With the device, I was able to turn off the lights and still read. I read on a pocketpc, a Dell Axim. (pictured to the right)I've read on my laptop & PC.I've read on my Blackberry CurveMy Nokia N810, which is a purely awesome geeky little device. (pictured at the top of the post). This is the device I use most at the moment for multiformat ebooks. If I really have to have an ebook w/ DRM, I'll read it with mobipocket on my Blackberry.
In the libraryIn the library, cramming for an examOn a long car trip. This method of reading is long in my past. I did this on family trips as a kid. Now, I get car sick.In bed.In the bathtub. How do you read?

Nine Naughty Novelists » Excerpt Thursday — HOT scenes (not for the faint of heart)

Thursday 14 January 11:30:00 UTC 2010

Beware of innocent peeping eyes behind you — the following excerpts require A/C and possibly a cold shower. Enjoy… Happy Thursday from the 9NN

PG Forte – Let Me Count the Ways
I schooled my features into neutrality, glanced up at her face and frowned. “Did I tell you to open your eyes?”
“What?” Her eyes widened in surprise. She stared at me. I stared back.
“Close them.”
For the space of maybe three seconds we continued to stare at each other. Then she breathed out a shuddery little sigh, and did as she’d been told.
My hands went back into motion; slowly smoothing across her ribs and up her sides, retracing their previous movement. “These last months, working with you, I’ve been like some little boy with his nose pressed up against the candy store window; admiring all that lusciousness, coveting it, but never expecting to actually have it. Never even expecting to get any closer to it than I was. Until tonight.”
My fingers met each other again, in the center of her chest, and then parted, sweeping outward once more and then down and around. “Tonight, you opened the door. You let me come inside. You should have known what would happen if you did that, Claire.”
“What?” she asked again, breathlessly.
Although I hadn’t so much as touched her breasts, her nipples were hard and had been so almost since I’d started. Now, as I bent close and blew alternating currents of warm and cool air across the tips, she shivered in response. “You … [Link]

The Skinny on Book Trailers

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or perhaps hiding out in the same cave as Osma, the chances are you’ve seen one book trailer at the very least. If you are an author, you may have tried your hand at creating one, or if your talents don’t tend to gravitate in that direction, then you may have paid someone to turn your book into a video trailer.

What the heck is a video book trailer and why should I care?
According to a recent article on the subject by bestselling, author Allison Brennan, book trailers are the hottest new thing in promotional tools for writers.
Book trailers are a short visual commercial that gives the viewer and idea what a particular book is about, including the tone of the book as well as its genre and main characters.

It doesn’t matter who you are:
Most authors will tell you, finding a surefire promotional tool that works 100% of the time is like finding the goose that laid the golden egg. It just doesn’t happen, folks. In fact, for the most part, promotion can be a game of trial an error.
As an author myself, I created my own book trailer for Thirty Lessons – my Samhain Publishing release, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU0~ and I’ve also paid a professional to create a video for my first romantic suspense release. I’ll let you be the judge on which is the best.

Authors such as Barbara Freethy, Brenda Novak, Sylvia …

Building Castles – Kelly Jamieson's Blog » Sick of reviews?

Thursday 14 January 11:00:00 UTC 2010

Gotta laugh, but I got two more!

This one's for Irish Sex Fairy from Alternative-Read.com:

Fraught with tension at the beginning…This is full of the complexities of life, joy, humor, and a woman who has to decide whether or not "they" win. I liked the premise the author worked with in this and can see a sequel possibility. This one is good for a night by the fire.

And another one for Sexpresso Night – 5 STARS from Just Erotic Romance Reviews newsletter:

“I loved everything about Sexpresso Night and to my surprise actually learned quite a bit more about coffee…Ms. Jamieson does a wonderful job showing their building emotions and pacing this story perfectly. The sex scenes were incredible, well-written and detailed…. Sexpresso Night is a story I will definitely be rereading and I will be on the lookout for other books by this author.” [Link]

Thirteen Sexy Mini-Excerpts from Erotic Exposure, my hot new contemporary erotic romance from Ellora's Cave!

1.

“You know, if this weren’t for such a good cause, there’s no way I’d be doing this,” Liz Bellamy said to her precious chocolate lab Godiva.

She was half hoping the dog would talk her out of it, regardless of the cause, but her pet just gazed up at her as if to say, “Don’t look at me, this was your idea.” In fact, from the canine grin on Godiva’s face, she’d almost think the animal was amused by the whole thing.

2.

Well, maybe saying taking off her clothes was an exaggeration. She might do a little arty exposing of the shoulders, maybe even show a little leg. Nothing more than that.

3.

Liz was so mesmerized by the photographs she didn’t hear anyone come into the room and she jumped at the sound of the man’s voice. Hand to her throat, she whirled around to see the most gorgeous guy she’d ever laid eyes on standing before her. Tall and muscular with dark hair and a chiseled jaw, he had the kind of soulful brown eyes a girl could get lost in if she wasn’t careful.

4.

Liz chewed on her lower lip. While part of her wanted to come back when Maxine was there, …

Taste of Kiwi » What An Insult!

Thursday 14 January 7:01:43 UTC 2010

I’m not sure where this list came from – it’s been on my hard drive for a while. I obviously saved it to be a TT because there are exactly thirteen items.

Thirteen Insults

1. I used to think that you were a pain in the neck. Now I have a much lower opinion of you.

2. No, I don’t mind that you’re talking so much — as long as you don’t mind that I’m not listening.

3. Save your breath. You’ll need it to blow up your date.

4. Someday you’ll find yourself, and you will be just as disappointed as the rest of us.

5. You say you’re a wit? Well, you’re half right.

6. If there’s ever a price on your head, take it.

7. I’ll never forget the first time we met — although, I’ll keep trying.

8. Your entire purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

9. Do you still love nature, despite what it did to you?

10. Now I know why some mammals eat their children.

11. Oh my God, look at you! Was anyone else hurt in the accident?

12. I look into your eyes and get the feeling someone else is driving.

13. Sure, I’d love to help you out. Do you remember which way you came in?

And one extra – I’d like to leave you with a parting thought, but I’m not sure you have anywhere to put it.

Do you have any …

Fierce Romance » Do You Believe?

Thursday 14 January 6:12:39 UTC 2010

I don’t typically write paranormal elements into my Intrigues. However, in my Jan. release, The Sheriff of Silverhill, I included a little paranormal action. The heroine is half Southern Ute, a Native American tribe in Colorado, and she has some special “powers.” These gifts brought nothing but trouble to the heroine’s mother, so the heroine doesn’t readily embrace them…until she has to so that she can rescue her daughter and catch a killer.

I don’t claim to have any special powers of clairvoyance, but I have had a few experiences that have led me to believe there’s more “out there” than meets the eye. When I was in my early twenties, I had left my proofreading job to take a job as a high school English teacher. It was the end of January and I was applying for my emergency teaching credential. The semester hadn’t started yet, and I was scheduled for my physical that day. Since the appointment was in the afternoon, I didn’t have anywhere to be prior to the appointment so I didn’t set my alarm clock. That morning I woke up with a start; it was like a shot to my heart. I went from sound asleep to sitting upright in my bed, wide awake. I glanced at my digital clock and it read “7:32” or something very precise like that. I tried to go back to sleep without much success.

I got up, showered, dressed, ate breakfast, and puttered around my apartment before my doctor’s appointment. The … [Link]
